How do you start your production??

Most people start with the drum, but I really don't see how, cuz for me the drum only doesn't inspires me. Me, I think of something in my head, like the main sound, then I put a drum on it. And the rest of the production evolves arounds that. What about you guys??

I usually start with what I'm focusing on as the "main" flow of the song. If I'm doing a song that the drums are my main focus, thats where I start. If I'm doing a song that the piano or melody is my main focus, thats where I start.

I think that most producers start with the drums because the drums usually set the tempo of the song and make it easier to build on AND the drums is one of the few instruments that USUALLY play from the begining to the end without stopping.

I don't think that there is any TRUE format for producing a song (i.e. you have to start with drums, then you have to do your melody, yahda, yahda...) I think its all up to the individual.

i start with drums then i sit back and
let it play over and over then i come back and add a baseline then some keys and strings
thing i do about 6 or 7 mix downs

It just depends on how I'm feeling. Usually I just go to my keyboard and play around on it. If I hear something tight, I start with that. Then add other sounds. Sometimes I do the same thing, but with the drums. If I am making a custom beat, I start with the tempo and then I play whatever comes to mind whether it is drums or instruments.

I used to start with the main sample , but now I always start with programming drums ... once it's done it's pretty easy to place elements

usually the drums come first.then i build the melody around that, and once i have my main chords the drums will generally change to fit the mood of the chords. the bass usually comes in last for me.

I usually start with the drums and if I am doing an track rnb I build a melody first or at least 3 main chords and then build the drums around it.

i have no format... i suggest you dont either... jus have sounds and drums ready...
and go with what you feeling.... i hate 2 go with a plan... i like 2 jus flow and go with what sounds nice 4 me at the time....

i dont go with an actual plan, but there is a usual process for me. i generally wind up taking the original framework apart and retooling it anyhow, so ven my plans will get messed up. ..... but all in all we all do what works for us.

I've found it very hard or impossible in fact to do a melody first and then put the drum on top of it.

For example i've sampled a few nice melodies of a couple of songs, and when i tried to put the drums on top of it it came out wizzzy wack, so i just usually start with the drums.

^ what do u mean by that? i'm pretty new to production (few months), im guessing that you're meaning slowing the melody down to match the drums?

yeah or speeding up the drums to match the melody..i find it much easier to play out a melody with a rythm in mind and then program my drums to shape the melody.....over time i have become very good at it but it tkes an ear.

Mos of da time wit a good Blunt. Then I either pull out da vinyl or my resampled sounds "which I sampled myself"on my zip. Ain't nuthing like a good vinyl piece thou, sometimes CD's are just to damn clean. Once I find that loop or sample I rarely loop. I chop all mos all my samples. Figure out tha sample pattern, lay it. "take a couple more pulls" go to da drum library load up some kits and rock out. Now if I use my keyboard I rock a beat 1st sit back pull on dablunt, then I hit daboard. But you got to train ya own ear. take from different people and desigin ya own routine. :dance:
