A compressor can be useful for drums. I tend to compress my drum hits pretty much all the time.
It's also a good idea to use EQ. If you hear any bass in the main sample, create two audio tracks. In the first track amplify the high ends, in the second track amplify the low ends (bass). That way both the melody and bass will come out. Of course, you should only do that if you think it's necessary. Like Ash said sometimes a sample sounds better if untouched.
