How Do Deals Go Down?

so if a label wants to use one of your beats what kind of deal usually goes down? do producers now a days get paid a flat rate and recognition and call it a day? or do they get points off the album and get paid a rate for the beat?

most newcomers take their upfront fee, credit and publishing...and that's it... when you get big time and have some leverage, you can request points

Depends on what kinda Power u have and who u know that will determin what kinda deal ya do or have the power to do

If you're lucky you get points off the album. That's dependant on whether your tracks will be one of the 11 usually selected to get a royalty.

If I was cutting a deal with you, I would try to buy your beat outright, with rights and all for a one time fee and no points. I would tell you that I don't know if anything will happen with the beat.

In the meantime I have the artist lined up for it. God, I love this industry.

yeah thats what an a&r tried to do to me last week. thats why i was asking. thanks god. but before i asked here i did tell him that, if possible, i would want points off the album and he didnt say yes, but he didnt say no either. he said we would discuss it further this week. so im hoping. if not then i can just let the beat go outright. i dont think they move enough units for me to worry too much about points. or maybe i should??

i assume that you shouldn't hope at all. if the a&r will give you points it's not because he thinks you deserve it but instead becease he thinks he has to so to own the beat. like god said, to me i see an industry like a pawn shop. you gotta have a hagglin mindframe but know when to hold em and know when to foldem. you can't get points on every beat b

yeah exactly. but i dont wanna push my luck too hard coz i do wanna make this sale for equipment purposes. haha! but yeah ill keep that in mind. pawnshop.... good analogy.
