I'm just wondering what kind of effect I can put on bass drums to get a classic hip hop sound. The sound I'm talking about is when you can just here sort of a muffled or muted kick. When ever i make tracks my kicks have too much punch in them. I'm not sure if i should use EQ on bass drums after I sample them or what I should do. If anyone out there has any drum sampling tips that would be very dope.

filter them, eq: cut and boost, compress low end theory....

filter them (parametric eq) with a low pass cut of at between 100-150hz,

boost the eq between 60-100hz about 6db, if it sounds "muggy" cut like between 2-6db at between 250-400hz

compress them at like -10db ratio between 1.5.1 - 3.5.1 (or whatever sounds good) fast attack (defo not 0.0ms maybe between 5ms-20ms,) medium release (like between 100ms-200ms)

this is obviously a guide, you gunna have to tweek the actual values yourself....

then layer the fuck out em...perhaps, eq and filter each layer slightly differently

ps this a rough guide for kicks, the eq on snare and hats is obviously different

I second that...

I also like to use reverb+gate combo on the kick...
and a lil reverb on the snare is always nice...

Or you could look for other drum sounds...

to get that classic hip hop 808 kick drum sound you need to get an oscillator and set it to make a low 40 Hz tone and layer that on top of your kick drum so they hit at the same time. You can connect it to the gate of your kick drum so that everytime the kick drum hits it will open the gate on the oscillator so that the oscillator will play for the same length of the kick drum so it sounds like u jus got one fat kick

go ahead and add a little delay to the kick so you don't get that "click" you usually get on default kicks. Cut some of the frequency, lower the pitch just a little and decrease the highs. Mids should be up a little, lows..a notch above that and some good compression should bring that "round ball" kick feel to your drums....
