yea so im from new zealand and like it sez

You know I think people forget that your idea of real Hip-Hop has alot to do with where you are from.

im 19 years old and i grew up in porirua east one of the hardest places in all of new zealand, this hip hop argument is interesting and all points here are as valid as the opinions that form them, and my view is this, hip hop music (yes just music) is an ever evolving artform, regardless of whether we like it or not mainstream hip hop is going to go through 'fads' concentrating on an appealing sound or. at the moment we have the south style beats coming in strong along with bongo laden beats of kanye west etc etc, we just have to roll with it and if you dont like it dont listen to it. simple. Next year well probably be arguing ova sum guy named lil dick and his didgeridoo samples. I havent always been listening to hip hop like most of the illmuzik fam ive tried my best to not limit myself in my muzik styles, i listen to pacific island music, country music, classical music, any music that appeals, shit when i was growing up my main muzikal influences where bloody boyz II men, i only started to seriously listen to hip hop when a song by a local nz artist called chains feat che fu came out in 1995 after that i became obsessed with my local hip hop scene, i love hip hop. simple. dats it coz im tired and im gona go watch p money and sirvere rip shit up.

one time i was chillin with these girls i thought were cool, and we're all just loungin and listinin to some tribe. one girl looks over at me and says "can we play some classic hiphop". and i'm like, "what do you mean. this IS classic hiphop". and she goes "no, like usher or somebody". OH MY GOD man. i fuckin lost it. i was there with two homies and (we were all sorts of fucked up too), just went OFF on these girls and argued for like 20 minutes just yellin and shit. it was mad funny. I couldn't talk to them for mad long tho and lost a lot of respect. and may TRIBE live on forever as true hiphop!

so basically, i agree that MOST mainstream is not real hiphop. it's all pop garbage that ruins people's images of hiphop for the true artists out there.

Word up! - See that tha thing...I think what makes mainstream suck so bad isnt tha popular styles themselves that people get so hung up on, its tha way that these styles/looks/particular cliches get blown outa proportion and morphed into a commerical beast that mutates and soon becomes that shit that you spoke of earlier Orph! - Misinformed youth thinking they got it all figured out, cuz thats tha current most popular thing - so it must be classic right!!?

Me, I can give a shit what everyone thinks of my music regardless if its underground or mainstream.....When it all boils down to it, its about what you like and whether or not you are able to purchase/listen to/support these artists and not the mainstream or whatever....its like everyone is just saying the same thing and not making any real valid points at all, just saying "it sucks" for credibility's sake..Arguments unoriginal as the artists you're against...If you dont like it, just dont like it and listen to what you want and stop worrying about whats on BET 106 and Park and what athe next Kanye clone has on the radio....just keep your head low and work on your own stuff...As long as you can get the music, and listen ot the music in peace then whats the problem?..It aint like Lil Jon or whomever is stopping you from buying that good shit or making good music.....

and on the zulu nation website, KNOWLEDGE is the unofficial 5th element.

I watch "Hiphop" on mtv when i need a good cold hearted laugh.

Hiphop is what it always was. In essence it will always be the same.

pop music culture has no say.

Hiphop is an attitude and Hiphop music is an expression of that attitude.

PREACH. AMEN. PREACH AGAIN.

it just bothers me the way that pop ruins hiphop's image. not that it really matters, since the people who really love it don't give a shit what other people think it is -- since the know what it REALLY is. but i hate how mad people have these preconceived notions of what "rap" music is. when people who have no knowledge of it try to impersonate emcees and the whole style they see on tv, or when foreign european kids, for example, walk around in bandanas and fubu jump suits and shit and act like they ARE hiphop. that shit pisses me off. cuase that's not what its about at all. that is NOT hiphop. people need to distinguish true hiphop from the shit you see on MTV. they should not even be considered the same music at all

and once again, who cares?.....Why should what gets played on the radio and what is or isnt percieved as hip hop matter?..I mean, we have so much craziness going on and so much better music out there to discuss than what sucks how it sucks and why it bothers you.........lets talk about some artists you like or at least lets critique the ones who are making the kindof music we are......Its rediculous and perhaps age or whatever has to do with it, but eventually you grow out of that childish everything sucks mentality but its like a phase and you move on grow up and deal with it....I mean, you must be a pretty hollow person to care so much about a musical genre that you would argue over it versus doing what you do and just living life in general...Hip hop aint politics...Like Nas said, why shoot the breeze about it when you be about it......Thats like going to a country music board and reading threads about how rap music sucks..I mean, shouldnt we be talking about the music we make versus the music "they" make?.....Not to beef with anyone but I find it a bit ironic that i've learned a great deal about commercial radio and artists from so called "real hip hop" sources yet i dont listen to the radio or watch tv.....hmmmm.....

Would u like someone to say that youve won Pimphand?....Yer preachin as much as tha rest and i dont see it any different! Yer hiphop wisdom isnt any better than anyone elses here in my opinion....I think that youve exagirated a little too much to make yer point, which by tha way was heard more than once.

"......Thats like going to a country music board and reading threads about how rap music sucks..I mean, shouldnt we be talking about the music we make versus the music "they" make?"

Ok , i understand what yer doin here and yer concern for that matter, but regardless thats tha dam topic of discussion!! - If you really dont like what this thread is specfically angled at then why dont u start a new thread that focus' on yer particular concerns more being that you keep whining about tha people that are already whining as you might put it....yer ploy on whats right or wrong doesnt change tha original topic here!

First of all, i've got no "childish everything sucks mentality" as you put it. True, i think its a shame the way our country is set up and how most of the population buys into what is "good" simply because that's what they are told is good by the people who are making it. I'm not complaining about it because that's just the way it is right now. Our whole culture is ruled by one thing...the DOLLAR. Of course there's certain people who don't buy into that, but they still live in a society where money is what speaks, and in terms of music, what "speaks" is what can make money. You don't think that if record companies all of a sudden decided to drop all their garbage artists and replace them with real artists, promote them, market them, and play them on the radio, tell everybody that there shit was the real deal, that we wouldn't have good music everywhere? As long as people are able to keep there creativity in their music and their own expression, the music will be good. but once money determines what kind of music is made, that's when it becomes shitty and is no longer real hiphop or any music in general. So yeah, i think it sucks that this is the way it is, but that's how are country is set up. I do think their music is bad but only because it's not music....its a marketing scheme to make a buck. so if you have a moral qualm with debating mainstream vs. underground hiphop, maybe you shouldn't get involved in this thread. hmmmmm.....

oh, and steady pimp. it all has to do with the knowledge of all people. what good is it for you to know what is good and what's not if everybody else is misled. i mean, if that were the case, who would you share your music with. isn't the point to show people what good music, values, morals.... whatever you like... really are? c'mon, you're not fuckin buddha here. and even he wanted to lead people to enlightenment. he wan't satisfied just knowing the TRUTH, he wanted to show it to others as well.

WORD-THA-FUCK-UUUP! - ITs like you can make money!, By all means - make money!!, But once you start letting that money control yer creativity in return to stay up in tha scene and on tha charts and whatnot, yer fuckin up tha music, cuz its originality and creativity gets sacraficed and starts to diminish. THere are a few people who can squeeze through that line and still make mad dough while stayin true, but its very uncommon...(MInd you only UNCOMMON, if you came into tha game in tha first place to be an ARTIST before a BUSINESS MAN....

You dont have to break it down any more than that, that in its essence is tha thing everyone on that side of this argument has been getting at! - You dont need to read into it anymore, thats it!!! Plain and simple!
