does anyone do this?

when looking for a closed hihat (for keeping the rhythm) and and open hihat (for swing or whatever) that match up well, do you just get the open hihat and make another copy of it except with hella decay and then use it for the closed hihat?

wondering

I do that sometimes, yes.
it works great.
most of the times I use different hihats though.
I use up to 5 or 6 different hihats sometimes to get a swing in my song.

I never use Decay on my open/closed hats.

Do you mean when your hats stop like right before your snare closes cause in FL studio I just use my A S D R or whatever so I can cut off my closed hat right before my snare comes in. I don't think you can do that w/ live drums.

I just started doing that today. I load a closed high hat and then use the 16 level key on my MPC2000. I set the parameter to "decay" so I get 16 different level of decay on the sample. That way I can switch it up a bit and my hats swing a bit more.

I got a rack of hi hats all snatched from vinyl....I look for the gritty ones too not alway the clean hats....I use at least 2 highats and an open hi hat, sometimes I use the generic hats from live drum kits......like Guevarra I like to use shakers a lot especially in my club tracks....studio engineers gate drums for the most part to regulate when the hat doesn't bleed over too far but if you use fruity loops you can use the attenuation/decay....pitch...... to get them to sound how you want.
