Hi-Tek's "best friend"- production question

Theres a new 50 cent song called "Best friend" (off of the GRODT soundtrack) produced by my favorite producer, Hi Tek. At the beginning of the track, Tek plays the song where the original sample came from, and then segues into this absolutely fire beat. My question is...can any of you guess or tell what techniques/methods he used to get the sample from its original state (which you can hear right before the Hi Tek Beat comes in) to how it sounds in his beat? I don't mean chopping or timing, because as far as I can tell that's not why it sounds so much better...he just took this hot but hollow sample and gave it unbelievable depth and realism. Any tips or comments would be really appreciated...even if you don't know how he did it, if you have some similar tips in the same vein, that would be great.

Also, because I bought the song off itunes (no way i'm wasting $13 on the whole cd), I don't have liner notes and can't tell where the sample comes from...do any of you recognize the artist from the sample he plays??

If you need me to post the song, let me know, but its all over ***** etc by now.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I usually EQ the sample untill I get a richer sound. I also like to play around with Reverb as well, to make the sample sound more dynamic and live.

In this track though it's possible that Hi-Tek only sampled the vocals and the rest is composed. But I haven't heard the original sample so I can't say for sure.

and just for the record, Classic isn't a veteran sampler.

yea they throw it thru a filter (like one of the settings on the dr rex in reason) so it sounds like its commin thru the radio or sumthin, then bring it back to its normal state wit lows and drums to make it sound hot. i havent heard this song in particular so it oculd be diff. ill download it and get back to u

I haven't heard the sample you are talking about but, Hi-Tek's gift is the way he EQ's his junk. His sound is based on the way he EQs' everything. I would imagine that he pulled another EQ rabbit trick on that sample. He's a master at that.

well yea the reason it sounds phat when it kicks in is bcoz they put a high pass filter on it for the intro so you dont get any bass coming thru so it sounds like a radio or woteva ! then when the track comes in they take the filter off and will put some EQ on the sample to beef it up a bit ! and obviously you've got an extra bass line and drums after the intro so its guna sound phatter anyway !

exactlly, when people do that they make it sound shit, like a transistor radio, rolling of the top and bottom freqs, then just turn of the filters when it kicks in....

Wow...thanks to all of u for giving me the heads up. That high pass filter makes sense, I mean now that I think about it, that is what it sounds like in the intro.

Also thanks for helping me find the sample!!

Peace

still pah-thet-ic...delete it again, it's still true

Well, i'm sorry but you just gave us a good reason for this! Personally, i'm against banning, but your behavior is just COMPLETELY out of line. We're a friendly community, there's absolutely no place for DISSING down here. You're responsible for this ban, nobody forced you to insult and belittle.

Good luck in the future,

Hey y'all..

I have a question for some of the more veteran samplers on this board, especially Classic.

.

In response, The intro is not just a sample, the guitar is but the keys are actually played JR Rotem. Its a common jazz piano chourd progession and JR is a jazz pianist, what he did is just play the piano riffs over the guitar.... To get the main sample fatter(thats used in the song) i would beeff up the low end and add sligh compression and REVERB to the sample to give it that hollowed out feel..

ALso notice that the bassline is playing along with the sample to give it a fuller feel, as well as the bells and other little instraments... . to make a long story short in order to make the sample fatter, EQ it , then compose over it with your own instraments...

Hope that helps

Let it be a lesson. stay humble. The only ones in this industry who can brag are RZA, Dre, Neptunes, etc...producers who have become legends in the game.

Peace.

Hi Lo that's correct, you would would be surprised who is on the board too what are you pulling a career move ? I like how Needlz made his move, I have deep connects as well whats it got me ? nada but lots of good advice and sometimes at their expense from being given the thumbs down in meetings and such, but I have had things I said get back to me thru another one of my connects that has major placements as well so it shows you if you are a nobody and your words can get back to you its a real small world in the industry and if you wack word gets around....but like I was told its not who you know or what you have to offer but how relevant you make yourself...but one person in the right place that either does not like you, heard bad things or just not feeling you can put a stop to your career in that direction at least , but its an example of what I hear every day and how easy it is to be blacklisted in the industry regardless of the talent you have, it's a very political world but its dog eat dog and you eat what you kill in the industry, I dont know what went down to get him banned but that looks like it was pretty bad from the looks of things without warning, what happened , I looked at his blog on myspace LOL?

first sentence relates to you being an A&R now but dabbling in production side, which is not uncommon in those circles...a lot of times producers become a&r...I was doing A&R for a minute for leanonementertainment.com now that all of that gotti stuff is over maybe I can do some work now LOL....
