to get good quality when recording vocals, what matters more a good program like protools or just a good mic?? because i know back in the 60's n 70's they didnt have protools but had good sound quality for that time. get @ me

its the vocal itself from the artist and a good mic. its not the prog.

The price of a mic does not always make it better or worse. One of my favorite mics for hip hop vocals (and fav mic period) is the Sennheiser MD 421 its around $300 and it works great on so many things. Its one of my "go to" mics for recording drums and bass amps. check it out http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MD421/
I know many people that wont use sub $1000 mic's but that 421 is a work horse.

I also dont think software really matters. Learn the gear you have and you can make great sounds. I would also make sure your monitors are top notch, they are the MOST important gear period.

Well what are you going to be using it for?
Also (basic explanation) an omni mic means it picks up the same abount of sound from any direction. The SM57 is an omni mic if you sing in to the side of it you will get the same sound as if you sing from the from but there willbe less "P'" and "S" sounds known as silebence (spelling?) I almost always have singer sing off axis to cut down on it, or you could make one of these on the cheap.
