this is another piece of shit list by VH1..this list is for the top hip hop songs of all time..public enemy's fight the power is voted the greatest of all time..i dont mind public enemy being on the list but number 1?...how can that even be determined its impossible to make a list of the greatest songs what makes fight the power a greater song than NY State of mind or can this all be simple..point is theres to many classics that were made and nobody shud be sayin that nothing but a g thing by dre is the 3rd greatest song in hip hop history fuckin bullshit..vh1 being the same cats that put foxy brown lil kim queen latifah and nelly ahead of method man redman and big pun not even puttin big L on the list of graetest MC's of all time..this industry is so screwed up and they wonder why underground cats have a chip on there shoulder...cuz were the only ones left

Though NY state of mind was a monster "lyrical" track it didn't appeal to everyone like fight the power did. Fight the power was a universal song, it didn't just apply to NY. I think that's why its number one. Fight the power was being played in heavy rotation in the sticks of Mississippi, Alabama, and the entire US, even overseas. Not just here and there but heavily played! I couldn't pass a car that wasn't bumping it when it first drop'd.

I think it's great that it's the #1 song. For those of us older cats on here, when that track dropped it was MONUMENTAL. Not only was it banging, but the lyrics actually meant something.
Look at the song title - shit, you got so many lazy, inactive, whiny complainers, here's a song actually telling people to leave their homes and stir shit up! The production and lyrics on that joint is HUGE.
I think it takes balls for VH1 to make this the #1 song instead of some pop rap. And yeah - I consider almost all of Biggie and Jay Z's tracks as pop rap compared to Fight The Power.
BTW - you can't ever win an argument when talking about people's opinions. If someone says their favorite fruit is strawberries, you can't yell at them that mango is so much fucking better, it's getting no one anywhere and is a waste of breath. Make your point, make people think, then be out. Yelling your opinion at people is pointless and usually has the opposite effect.

I agree about that. The first time I heard Rebel Without a Pause I was on a school bus,and some kid was playing it on a boombox. I will never ever forget that moment, that was a life changing track for me, unlike any other song that ever came before it...

I don't co-sign 'who's the best lists' in most cases because it depends largely on where you're from. If I'm from the South, then Ball and G and UGK, ARE my RunDMC and EPMD.

All that aside, Public Enemy had an impact beyond words and measure. There's no other group I could compare them to past or present because they went HARD and they were
commercially successful. You truly "had to be there" (been raised/aware during that era)
to appreciate what they put down.

NY State of Mind is a brilliant song, I know it word-for-word, and I was the BIGGEST Nas fan from his earlier mixtape work through most of his albums - but even HE would tell you that Public Enemy was 'that' group and Fight the Power influenced HIM.

VH1 has been stepping up especially considering the fact that they didn't even play hip-hop for a long time when it first launched, and I love watching Hip-Hop Honors each year - because it celebrates those who put it down first, which is something that hip-hop should be doing anyway - respecting the architects of hip-hop.

With that being said, you can't go against Chuck D and Public Enemy and what they meant to the game no way, no how lol.

I feel you Shadeed on it depends on where you're from. Only difference are only one Run DMC and EPMD, and Rakim, Kool G Rapp etc etc.....they started it for everyone...not just NY.

Second...I got no problem w/ Fight the Power being #1. It has to be the most influential and powerful songs ever. I mean....fuck VH1 is right....not too long ago they didn't even play hip hop. Matter of fact (and I've said this on this website before), they used to take R&B songs that had a rapper on it, and cut out the verse and just play an instrumental. Now they do Hip Hop Honors. That said, I obviously do not agree w/ the list, but I have no problem w/ PE being #1. That song dropped in a time where racial tension was at it's highest in the last 30 years. Fight the Power was more than just a song...it was a movement.

I think its right that PE get their mention, but best of all time, I dont know.
I know that in the youth club days, PE is all you would hear being played, it was very influential to a lot of people I know.
