I dont think that reason itself isnt really subjected to topic, platform itself isnt relevant to produce any kind of style, or genre for that matter.

E=IxR...dead psu without it and no beatz at all! It a helluva formula!

South: 808 drum kits, Synth Leads, Synth Brass, snare rolls
Dirty: Sloppy drum sounds, slightly off beat and more live feel, basically no synth and lot of sampling

hmm Dre type beats: Heavy chords, piano, strings, a lot of orchestra type sounds/instruments and choirs

could go on forever those are a few

Starts in the wax. I usually have a lotta loops and stuff that I have already chopped up in reycle, but I didn't do anything with. I usually just start putting chops and layers together. thats one of the good parts about Reason. I just throw a few chops in, then I can go to a different record I chopped up in recycle and match the pitch and layer and have something new. Once I got a good groove its time to find some drums that match. I'm real picky about snares. I have to have a snare that fits. I can usually work with the kick and Hi hats and other precussion, but I usually like to find my snare 1st that will go with it.

Just imagined if everyone thought like this we'd be stagnant. The reason we have great things is because the knowledge was shared and said knowledge either spawned something new or was revised. I can understand your pride issues but face it, you and everyone else has learned from someone else in one way or another whether it be a teacher, a book, a tutorial, project files, etc... which had to come to light by whom, a person :)

What if the tables were turned? For example what if you wanted to become an actor but nobody wanted to give you acting lessons or there were no books on acting because people didn't feel like sharing their knowledge. Like I said we'd be stagnant. You can continue to do as you please which is your choice but everyone has to start somewhere and sometimes a lending hand is needed.

Anyway you can take the above anyway you want but I'll leave you with a quote from the movie AntiTrust as well as the moral of that movie.

"knowledge belongs to the people"

^^^^I fully understand your point, but thing is, beat making is not acting. Acting is taking another persona, characteristics that are not yours. But beatmaking (to some) is an art, meaning it's a reflection of your persona... of YOU, in a way.

Giving a fomula for beat making would be like giving a formula on how to do a painting. People can explain the technics involved, but each and everyone here has a specific sound that was crafted through trial and error.

There are a lot of hand that are lended here, but you gotta understand no one wants to have a clone of himself in the beatmaking biz, cuz your individual sound is what makes you you in this biz... Imagine if each actors played the same way. If Morgan Freeman played the same way Leonardo Di Caprio did... what would happen then, tell me?

See where I'm going with that?!

Whoa!! this is kinda going off subject,
my main goal with this thread was to show the different elements with beat styles not so much your own style, like what instruments are used mostly for crafting a West coast Club beat, not so much what kind of sound you make, there is a formula for making types of beats i just was expecting a shed of light for those who cant produce a dirty south beat or a west coast beat.

I don't see how it's implied that the thread starter wanted to clone his/her style. The person simply was interested in formula for specific genre. For example in dance music you have 4 on the floor which is your basic dance drum formula. One could then go into about intro, chorus, breakdowns, etc... at specific bars but nope instead he got that comedic reply I originally quoted :)

Well, let me rephrase what I meant by "totally different"...

now, in my opinion, part of beatmaking is experiments and failures. It's actually how people naturally learn shit. If what you call "formula" is what instruments are used in specific styles, I'd just say... well LISTEN and LEARN... I'm not beaing a smartass here and It's not that I dont wanna answer, but different producers use different instruments and effects. And the similarities are kind of easy to find by yourself.

I dont really think that someone needs to tell you that a crunk beat uses a LOT of synth sounds. Even someone who is not a beatmaker knows that. Maybe you dont know the specific instruments, but that's something else. Easstcoast? Well, it depends what producer you're listening to... feel me? Same goes for the west.

There are too many styles and too many sounds, even if people would start telling you: "West coast G-Funk is this, Hyphy is that, Gansta is this, etc... that would be waaaay too long." And even then... the answers could actually restrain your creation process...

My suggestion, is LISTEN and LEARN... pretty simple.

oh, and Digital, no need to answer back on that comment I just did... if you want to answer his question or know what he wants, just do so... I'm pretty sure kontents is grown enough to answer to what I said by himself (dont take that as a personal attack, I'm just saying... there's no beef...)

Alright Well here is a web site with beats which im sure you've already seen it before http://malefactor.org/beatmakingvideos

if you check out j-traxx 2 beats there both west coast and you can tell, now thats a pretty good example of how to make a west coast beat so there is obviously a formula now wheres the formula for an east coast beat, any one can listen to a beat and disect it but wheres some good pointers to really catch a certain style of beat?

Ok, I can help you... but I still think listening to beats will help you better than anything someone can tell you. Thing is, my vision of what a east coast beat should sound like will influence the way I make a east coast beat. If you listen to Hi Tek and Scott Storch, well, they both did East and West, and their take are totally different, imo...

Now, I'd say that there are lots of different flavors in the East, but (to my knowledge) each flavor aint gotta name, like in the West Coast. Still, there is a particular sound that is definitely THE sound that says: "Yeah, that's East Coast right there." and that's sampling raw drums (see my avatar... yeah I love drums, and that's what I meant when I said that I'm influenced by what I think... in my beats, I take a lot of time on my drums...)

You gotta find some breaks (a break, if you dont know what that is, is a section of a beat (more common in funk, like James Brown...) look it up, you'll find more infos somewhere on the site), some good breaks and cut them up in small pieces so you can have rearrange the break to make a new drum line. Then the melody is normally also a sample that was cut in pieces too... To have a good idea of what I'm talking about, listen to DJ PREMIER... that's the REFERENCE in east coast beats... specially his early work...
