Few Questions

Hey, had a few questions regarding reason,

I love a lot of the sounds in Maelstrom/Subtractor, and I'd like to mix them in with my samples a bit. I haven't been able to find a way to tune these at all, any help?

Also, is there a way to play a sample all the way through in NNXT on a midi controller? I can't seem to find it.

U can tune the subtractor in the middle section of the module where you see osc1 and osc2 look for semi and cent. Semi is for big adjustments and cent will make small ones. It's similarly located on the Malstrom by the same name semi and cent in the osc A and osc B sections. Remember in the Malstrom it's usually two diff't sounds combined so you will probably have to adjust both.

As far as the NNXT. What alot of Reason users don't know is that you can load DR. Rex slices into it. You'll need Recycle to make your slices. Then the slices you make will be assigned to your controller keys or pads. You can also try this. Copy the sample pattern with Dr. Rex to a sequenced track. Load that same exact sample into an NNXT and drag the data from the Dr. Rex track to the NNXT track. Delete the Dr. Rex and track and the Data will play the same from you NNXT. You get more control of your sample like that. The NNXT allows you better sample manipulation. I hope this helps!

To tune my shit i always used the fine knob on the nnxt ....is this way easier with the using the semi and cents???

That works pretty good on the NNXT. You don't have that function on the Mal or the Sub though. I will say that Semi and cent is a more precise adjustment but the tune on the NNXT can get the job done for adjustments that need to be slight.

BUt how come when i pithc up a sample the tune goes all out of wack anyways, whats the reason for that.

Is it better to chnage tempo when fucking with a sample ( say a old soul song)

This is my opinion on using old school samples. I've been messing with them alot lately.

What I do is build the song(track) around the sample and not the sample around the track. U feel me? Especially if its a major loop of the sample that you're working with. IMO the song will always come out better with less pitching and tuning. Now if you do decide to pitch and tune it, even do that before you start building the song. You usually hear the way u want the sample or song in your head before you start building the track right? I know I do. Like for instance I use acid pro to chop the initial sample..then I use propellerheads recycle to make my slices and pitch and tune it in recycle(I set the tempo there as well). Then I follow the same premise..which is to build the song around the sample. I don't think its wise to try to pitch and tune an old school sample within the song. Shit just takes to much effort and can be done more efficiently before you start the track. Now if your just using various chops you may have to pitch and tune within the track to get it to flow. I do my chops in a similar manner and the rest of my samples. I do my drum pattern...play my chops and if I'm going to layer in other instuments I can play them in the right key instead of having to retune the sample to fit the backing instruments.

This is how I do it. Diff't strokes for diff't folks though.

I read somewhere that this is how Kanye does it...and damn it! If it works for him it can work for me..LOL!

Yup, that's what I do allways... Sometimes I'll lay down drums first if that's what I feel like but the very first melody I lay down would be the sample I'm using. You can adjust it to taste if you want then add the rest of your stuff along with it... The only time I add a sample last is if it's more of an effect or just a one note stab that I pull up in nnxt and can play on my midi controller to find the right tune. Oh and when loading a one note stab in nnxt do it in the detailed section at the bottom of the unit so it translates it into a scale over your keys so you can even play a melody off of that one note. I'm sure there's other ways to do this stuff but this is the way I use to keep things solid and spend less time tuning and more time creating.

Fa sho. I've just been diggin' into Reason 3.0 since it drop'd. I can't wait to dig into 4.0. I'm a beta tester but you can't really dig with that shit. They are up to the first launch protype after 6 beta's so I hope 4.0 drops by Octobber. And for testing that shit I better get a discount....lol

Laying it down with Dr. Rex and then loading the same sample up into NNXT will change your sample game for sure. The sample can get a bit choppy in Dr. Rex but it's excellent for getting the tempo just right. Draggin that same sample to the NNXT track allows you to get that shit tighter so it flows better. Add some decay, release,attack an paramento and your keys will unite and make the sample flow really well. Say it's a piano sample...and you only use various chops from it. That shit will flow like you can actually get down with them keys. Blew me away when I tried it. Hope it worksout for you! B Ez.
