I have an ethical question when it comes to digging for loops. How long can a sample be before its just a straight jack of an original song. Also, if the song is really obscure is that ok?

yup. usually people would take a 4 bar loop and loop it.. or 8 bars. or two seperate 4 bar loops. and some vocals. etc. That is generally quicker and less memory consuming than just takin the whole song and putting drums on it. but If that's what you want to do, then be my guest. Its doesn't relaly matter HOW you sample, as long is it turns out the way you wanted it to, your in the clear.

Generally, I only use 2 to 4 bar loops, but i found something this week that is absolute insanity so I may have to use a 8-10 bar piece of it.

10 bars is the 8 bar length of the main chord progression + two for the outro into the main piece of the song.

the way i see it, is if people can tell you put your spin on it or reinterpreted it, and it does its job, i think its cool. and as far as sample obscurity, i try to use super obscure samples and mangle them to make a whole new thing simply to be safe but in reality we're not that big as of now so we're not too much of a threat...just do you man.

I'm not so much worried about getting caught by the artist, I'm more concerned with pulling a Will Smith and just ripping off a song. But, if the beat is hot who cares?

i usually use 2 bar loops because its easier to match the drums to the tempo. Cause believe me alot of old soul shit and early music was not all recorded with a metronome!!!!
