Browsing through EBAY I notice alot of people selling MPC's Keyboards, Turntables and hardware studio equipment sometimes like to say the equipment has been in a smoke free enviorment.

Right now I just got a turntable and Oxygen Midiman 8 so I was wondering since my setup is far from smoke free *if you know what I mean* over time will my equipment be destroyed by my bad habits? It's not htad bad but enough that a prolonged situation has caused me some concern.

Is there some type of direct connection between smoke and equipment performance?

Well someone let me know because I have gotten mixed answers.

I would be surprised if smoking damages the gear but it will definitely cause the gear to get a yellowish brown 'tan' if it's white or some light colour...also, I might smell like an ashtray as someone else put it.

I smoke personally but not any where close to my equipment. I had a old school mackie 1604 got all crackly basically unusable it took only about 2 years to mess it up. smoke also damaged one of my 1200's. Since that experience no one smokes in the lab period. It's best to stop doing it while your stuff is still working good. It's a pain to buy new stuff since they wanted to charge me almost the same as I payed for the 1604 and the 1200. In the end it isn't worht it.

I used to be an intern in Too SHorts studio. They smoked in there all the time. Ounces of weed. the faders were shorting out and makeing cracking noises when you moved them. If you value your equipment, Don't smoke around it. i wouldn't even smoke in the house at all. unless yo uhave $$ to burn buying new stuff over time.
