I have been looking at purchasing an ENSONIQ ASR-10, but i feel it may be a little too expensive or complex for me to use just yet. Can anybody reccomend a cheaper piece of equipment which has similar qualities? Thanks.

Wow, Reason looks impressive. Now i know i am going to sound nieve or dumb, but if your keyboard connects up to the PC why are you going to need such good mics?

For Software: Reason or FL Studio.

Hardware: ASR-X or MPC 2000. If you like the sound of the ASR-10, get an ASR-X.

asr-x's got fuced up sequencers though... they skip and act weird sometimes especially if u are messing with the effects while the track is playing

With one of the original ASR-X's, with the original OS, yeah, I can see that. With the last update, it's pretty stable. Then too, I never screwed around with the onboard fx while working on a beat.

There's also the ASR-X Pro. Either one, they're dirt cheap on ebay nowadays.

with the price of a asr-10 you can get reason and a midi keyboard, and have a more versatile setup ya feel me. I don't rap but I am getting a mic anyway cause I think I might start recording some weird shit to see what I can come up wit ya heard.

asr-x is underrated, OS 2.67 is packed with features and the glitch is due to max processing...good thing...i dont use the sequencer, i have an mpc for that....the sound is killa! sigma delta converters and the fx unit is that of the Dp-2 ( can give a nice dirt factor to your beats ). Eq, comps, guitar amp modelling etc its all there, and the machine is bargain...do get scsi for the unit or score the Pro which has scsi embedded on the motherboard. I think the asr-x can be fitted with a cardreader when you have the chickensys mod and scsi board (instead of a scsi - zip you could fit the cardreader). Both also have a rompler embedded with sounds of MR.rack which are ...okay, drums are nice the rest could be usefull once in a lifetime lol but you can add other roms to the machine. The pro version also has the stomper plugin build in the OS on which you can emulate a sort of 909 with all the belonging parameters but i havent heard that one...

i have an asr maxed out but with no scsi, i prob wouldnt be too sad to get rid of it. havent used it in years.
ive messed around with the asr x's as well i thought they felt a little weird, my dude could bang some good shit out of it tho. there was a model that came out before the asr 10 that might be cheaper and it sampled as well, it was the eps 16. but asking for a simular piece thats cheaper with simular qualities,,,, i dont think its gonna happen. in fact i think the prices of asr's are going up now because they are becoming vintage. the asr 10's efx are still killer to this day. if you want cheaper (sampler wise) , roland has some sp model samplers you could find for dirt cheap, like the sp-202.

if you find yourself about to spend any kind of money, you mise well think about the future, a few dollars more for something that will be standard for the next some odd years would be worth it in the long run.
like someone else said earlier, your gonna have to learn any piece you get. if you have access to a computer that means you have access to free sounds, so i would suggest a mpc. the 2000 model's you can find for cheap now, i would get the xl if possible tho, cuz it can be modified...
