I was having a convo wit another producer on AIM,
somehow the topic it came up about being the best producer in the world

I said i wasent really interested, he couldent see how i couldent care

I told him that being the "best" producer isent my reason for making music. I could care less. I much rather make music that is orginal and makes ME feel good. Now if being the best is attained while doing that, then cool. But honestly i couldent give 2 shits about being the "Best " producer in the world. I just wanna be the best at making music that makes me feel good.

Plus if i thought about being the best everytime i made a beat, i would drive myself crazy....

He couldent understand that,

What are yall views on this as fellow producers?? Do you want to be the best?? how do you think having that goal in-mind effects your music???

Drop some opionions

I strive for excellence. When you do something you really love I think you would strive to be one of the best. Even if it's just a hobby. You don't have to blow up or get your name out, but if most of the beats you make can carry a track alone. Then you have done your job. Because the term "best"...it's relative.

anything that i enjoy doing i become a perfectionist at, nothing but the best is good enuff ! its the same with everything i do, if i start a new hobby and get into it and enjoy then i gotta be the best, im the kinda person that thinks i need to be the best or why bother ?

yup... i do, personally... i want a legacy... when people talk about great ones, i want my name mentioned. i want to be considered one of the greats.

above that, i want to be happy with my product and career.

the drive to be the best within a subjective art form essentially means catering to the popular opinoin of the people...... which is both good and bad...

so at the end of it i simply want to leave an impression and mark on music that meant something.

I strive to improve and be the best at what I do. Holding the term of "the best in the world" really doesn't press me. If it happens in the process then cool. Don't get me wrong I do like recognition. I think the difference between the person that does this solely for the love and the person that wants to be the best is the lengths that they'll go to just to satisfy their passion.

See me, I ain't concerned about being the best, but I have a chip on my shoulder and I am out to prove some shit......thats basically my aim....then I want to be able to show the critics and some people who thought they knew how to find and judge talent something just the opposite......I have run into too many haters in the last few years so I need to break out of the level I am on, make good music and prove them completely wrong.......most of the hot producers you hear out now, were overlooked, told no, thumbs down, that shits too unorthodox and a bunch other stuff before they were quote unquote the best at what they do......most people only see the end product of success.......but the bumps and knocks are there for a purpose too.......never let anyone tell you cannot get better or this is some natural shit.....its all completely false...stay tuned and you will see....keep grinding because having the goal in mind keeps you hungry and nothing will stop you........I have seen the fruits of persistence, PRACTICE and grind.....some skills that some you have you probabaly dont know and or even thought to find them and then improve on them.......Doubt or letting someone else cast doubt on what you do is your biggest enemy.....keep your head up and make music...take the comments good or bad and drive on with the mission......

Who decides who the best is, and who said we should follow them?

I think if you do your best, to yourself anyhow, that's all that matters.
It'll also reflect in your work. Some people will see the light, others will be left in the dark.
There is no best in the world. Records are made to be broken.
Just make good music man.
Feel me?

maybe im weird man, im competitive with alot of things in life, but music isent one of them, i dont make music to "compete" with other cats or be known. i do it purely for my enjoyment. Maybe im naive or something in that aspect but thats my drive.

That aspect comes with the territory, like or not.....dont get me wrong but it looks like you are moving to NY with big dreams, I know several insiders and if you are looking to score some sort of record Classic, the reality of the Game you are getting into is amongst one of the THE MoST competitive unfortunatley so maybe you have answered a question for yourself bro........its music but its showbizness bottom line business....as much competition as the job interviews you mentioned you went on....there are no give me's.....if you in a pool of sharks and you are the tuna you get eaten...plain and simple I see people that are in this to put food on the table, like I said if you just enjoy it to thrill yourself as a hobbyist, lounge or backyard musician then I see your vision....but other than that if you setting out to be in the Music industry........the old saying its not a Game is very true.....so suit yourself but I am sure there are many that love making music but when it comes to getting on projects they not just sitting around waiting for the meek or someone not willing to put their work up against someone else and say ......MY MUSIC is Better.....Plus on top of that they just as talented or more than you or me and love the same enjoyment you get from making music butd on top of that VERY COMPETITIVE and serious about their business especially when they think someone else is going to get money they could have..That my friend is being competitive...like it or leave it....

I agree with U there. One thing I have learned (about life in general) is this: mo matter how good/great you are; there is always someone better. Being the best producer in the world means also taking many losses with that title. I'm like you, I would rather be the best at doing what I love to do, the way I do it. I would love to have Dre's title and in some ways I strive for that but I will never be Dre and the world doesn't need another Dre. God made me for a spacific purpose and to do spacific things in certain ways. I study certain formulas a principles they use to make their tracks bang and I apply them to my stuff as well as my own formulas.

I would like to be the best gospel rap producer and also be ranked among cats like Primo, Dre, Timbo but not for my own glory but for God's glory. To show the rest of the hip-hop populace that the best music doesn't just come from these people. There are some great music w/ a great message coming as well. I have that in mind with every track I make. I know not everyone will feel me and that's ok because my stuff is not for them. But for those that do feel me, I think they have an appreciation for raw hip-hop and music in general and are tired of hearing the same ol' stuff and are looking for something different.

dont get it twisted...

dont get me wrong yall,
just becasue i say im not obessed with being the best, dosent mean im not competitive or drivin.

Im an extermley competivie person, i think thats why i have done pretty well in life. I love proving people wrong. THe differnce is that with my music and most other aspects of my life, im competive with MYSELF. I think that when people are preoccpied with being the best, they become two concered with what other people are doing instead of tryinng to be creative.

WHen i ran track we used to call it "look over your shoulder syndrom". Everyone who ran track knows that when ur running a race, as soon as u look at the people around you, you slow down becasue your not focused on your own goals & performance. I think this can be applied to hip hop production as well.

When i was in gradschool i delt with this alot, its very cuthroat and cats were so concerned with getting the highest grade , they forgot the reason why they were there in the first place which was to learn....

Some good comments are being said, so keep em coming, i just wanted to clairfy my position
