I was with some of my peoples and we were listening to this Rae jawn Pete Rock did "Kid's That's Rich" and cats were losing their mind! And I'm like "it's aiight" and they're like "it's Pete Rock" and I'm like "so? It's just aiight"...But for them it's Pete Rock...you can't say a Pete Rock track is aiight, and I'm like "wow, that's where we are now huh?" But I've been in the convos a million times with cats. Like it's taboo to say a Dilla beat was just aiight and truth be told, some of them were...but why do cats do that? Is the producer or mc's name SO big that the listeners don't even have an opinion anymore?

It reminds me of a story back when my man was A&Ring for Sauce Money and Primo gave him a track and he played it for us and we ALL were like it's cool but if ya'll paying for it you need to go back and get a banger. And my man was like "how do you tell Primo you don't like a beat" and I'm like just tell dude...and he came back with the Against the Grain track and we were like "now that's what I'm talking about"! But the moral was, my man was like how do you reject a Primo beat and I'm like if you don't like it, you don't like it but don't settle...I don't care who it is!

Its def the name recognition/Hype. You're judged on your last records and if you're known as the ish for a good majority of your releases you get little passes and people will back you. People felt connected to the music and that artist became a good friend/family.These days I dont really see that happening tho! Theres sooo much music, plus the overall quality/vibe is down, people just dont ride for artists like that anymore.

It was a connection, like if your friend played ball against some unknown dude, you'd root for him the same if he broke dudes ankles, and dunked on him on some And1 ish, or if he was gettin dogged!. Thats the mentality.

No PASSES over here btw.

I don't give a pass.

I think Swizz Beats is one of my fav producer of all time but I think his dope/ass ratio is like 10/90. He makes a lot of shitty beats but the few that are dope are SUPER dope. Same thing with Primo. He's my fav of all time, but he has a few duds from time to time.

I just boot the sorry tracks right out the iPod.

The question is... DO YOU GIVE A PASS TO NOBODIES?

Guys like Croup, DJ Grumble, Drumatic, Llingo, Pig Pen, Tokyo Cigar, Steez, Fuze, etc. I don;t care who it is, if I get my hands on a beat and that shit is dope... I play the hell out of it.

Why would you give a pass? Yes..it's tough to say your fav producer/mc put out some garbage.....

Like the joint Primo gave to 50 previously...thought the beat was UGH.....sounds like he did that beat in like 30 seconds....Primo has made some SERIOUS bangers....But there were some wack joints he's done....

Nas is my favorite artist/MC But honestly.....I don't like most of his songs......But the few that I do like...I love them....I wouldn't give him a pass...
Shit..I tell my artist if shit is wack or not...he gets no pass from me...I don't care if he's my boy....

Fuck a pass....

I don't even give my girl a pass...I tell straight up if she looks like shit...

haha this reminds me of when Pete and CL had the classic LP out and some dude was talkin about Pete Rock sucks, My man was like "MF'r YOU suck!" LOLOL
haha ooohhh... memories.. so classic we bring this up for nostalgia still..
Its not like the guy who said it could even approach making a track like PR.

I wouldnt say something sux unless I know I can do it np. Especially if it has a following.
As far as a pass I would say no, if ya boy is slippin they are slippin and you should tell em .

Well you can't make bangers all the time, I'm sure Pete Rock and Preemo have plenty of wack beats in their vaults ....it's really hard to be consistent especially if you've had a long career like the two I mentioned , .... that being said there's nothing wrong with being objective, personally I'm not afraid to give an honest opinion.

Definately, no pass. I saw an interview with 9th that someone posted on ILL and he was saying that the beat that he gave E. Badu was like 7 yrs. old yet it was one of her best sellers. Wack is only an opinion, what you called wack today may be a hit in the future. Would any Lil Wayne joint be hot in the RUN-DMC era? (not thats its hot now but just for reasonings sake). So I say no to the pass, but at the same time have an open mind.

Good point Dac. I agree!

I have been a fan of diamond d for a very long time. It was like everything he did was golden.
And then he released "The Huge Hefner" Album, and it just seemed to trudge along. I didnt really like any of the tracks on there. It had become all soft. It was like the passion was gone.
I even messaged Diamond through myspace and said I wasnt feeling it, he said he was going for the female market. And with the music industry being the way it is these days I sort of understood, but...
Im waiting for him to drop that hard street album I know hes got hidden away somewhere. Until then I stay disappointed.

Im all about telling it how it is, there are too many yes men and idol worshippers in the world already.
If my favorite producer does something wack, then someone has to tell them. I just hope they appreciate the honesty, and I dont come off as an arsehole.

For instance: KRS is one of my all time favorite emcees, but dude is gettin a lil strange and he hasn't been all that wit the rhymes as of late. May change, I hear Canibus is gettin at him. I dunno, Can eats legends for dinner....

I believe he would choke on Kris though.
He got sent to the ER by LL

" How many MC's must get dissed ?
B4 someone says dont F with Kris?"

I will give them a pass, and I will tell you why.

People like Pete Rock are under contract to put out x amount of albums a year and they have a deadline or they don't get paid. Same thing happens with groups all the time, thats why the second album usually sucks because it MUST get made in a certain amount of time. It becomes a job that you just have to get through to get paid and everyone can have a bad day at work :)

This seems to happen mostly in the backpack crowd. I hate it cause ppl are so blatantly bias some times like "oh its boom bap? Its classic!!! Dilla eq'd the kick? Thats the best part of the song"...most ppl with this mentality dont really understand what hip hop or music really is all about, but they'll be the first to tel you when something is "real" ha!

What? Yo, not lyrically.

I dunno...

I think.....maybe "lyrically" canibus was better...but overall song? Canibus got fucking massacred....Canibus never recovered from that song...Or that album...

People are allowed to have bad days...but you don't say shit is dope because of the person who created it.....Rushed or not, if you don't like it, you don't like it......plain and simple...

you dont really get hip hop if you think canibus beat LL, you think you do, but you dont....
