I check the date .... If its in the 70's ill take it !!! .... Some times the cover speaks to me and ill grab it .... lol .... I do garage sales alot if they got a crate ill say 25 for it all and most of time ill get it ..... I really dont care whats in the crate because u never know what you can find ...... I have like 4000 records and so far not to many doubles ...... I search on ebay for record lots and save the search and tell it to email me every time new lots get listed so pretty much every night i get a email with the new lots and just the other day I bought a 50 record soul lot for 8.99 buy it now and 15.00 for shipping so thats 50 cents a record thats a steal to me ...... I only owned maybe 2 or 3 of the 50 i got from the lot ..... So that was a double bonus ...... GOODWILL is a good spot too .... Im sure GOODWILL near us all ....... My wife worked at GOODWILL like 10 years ago and some guy brought in 10 crates of nothing but oldies all in plastic protected covers i couldnt understand why someone would get rid of those ....... After he carried in 6 crates my wife said to him my husband collects records and he said you should have told me i would have gave them all to you ..... So he gave her the last 4 and I got some dope shit let me tell you .... So tell ur wifes go work at goodwill ..... lmao ....

exactly. between 68 and 75 theres so much organic, soulful stuff from across all genres. i buy records from that period blindly. but from late 70s on the sound changed. im not sure, but i think its 1) digital recording and mixing emerged and it took some time until people realized that analog warmth had gone missing and 2) those creepy synth sounds became popular.
sometimes i find good sounds in 80s jazz, but thats only occasionaly

80's had some wicked stuff, but I guess it depends on what you like...

not all 80s music sucked.. i liked the electronica sound that some of 80s joints had.. u just gotta be careful.

i look for coolness of cover, age, and instruments used .. most records have all the musicians and what they played on the record. If I see a diverse set of instruments, like organs, sythesizer, horns, flute, sitars, etc... Im defintely copping that record! If I see only two or three basic instruments like guitar, bass, and drums, and thats it, i might pass. Unless the cover is cool of course. Basically the Cover comes before anything else. I never actually listen to a record before I buy It. Takes all the fun out of it. I just go on blind instinct.

anything beyond 77 i look specifically for certain arrangers and producers. there are few sick electric pianos in that 80s era.

edit: which doesnt mean I ignore other stuff, found ill samples on bullcrap 87 records too, but rather by accident

okay point taken , I think I am referring to the masses of pop and "new wave" music.
Its different when you heard it all the time compared to hearing it for the first time.

Electronica is excluded... But no one is sampling that , that I am aware of.

Im completely guilty of judging a record by its cover.. You dont see good album covers that much anymore..

Exactly. Sometimes, if I'm really lucky, there's already some stains on it.

Na but seriously, it really wouldn't surprise me if all those old Barry White records were covered in nasty stains. I don't really know how to tell if it's a cum stain or not, thats some science shit, for all we know, it's become part of the cover, and we just think it's some abstract art cover.

Well, it's hard to tell for sure, but both Fade and I have dug in two spots where there's tons of porn with records... it was disgusting, seriously. Right Fade?

Dude..I've gone to the goodwill and picked 5 records with my eyes closed...

found 2 good ones out of the 5.....

Some weird shit, I tell ya...

Some chick wanted to sell 400 records for 40 bucks on craigslist...

I put the number down...then lost it...

Someone copped it..because she took the listing down an hour later.....

That was the most homosexual thing I've done since that one time in the gold's gym steam room...but that's another story..

nice article, thanks pug

find the scratches and dirtyness of samples important, especially when bargain binning. even if its a pound/dollar a records little use if theres one part of the song which skips or if its that dirty the noise is too much

and the friends and family tip, definitely. clear out the grandparents collection

im still jus trying to get a collection. not got many yet, but still not listened through them all, i dont see the sense in peopel having thousands of records if youve never listened to many of them. although it is incredibly cool...
