DAW or Hardware or Both

Whats good fellow producers/beat makers. Whats your preference in DAW to use and why?

I'll start out with mines of beat creation in Logic Pro, and mixing/final production in Pro tools.
Logic - to me just really dope with its baked in tools, and i can get funky in the creative space.
Pro tools - Keeps me sharp using a industry standard daw, and something about the UI when mixing full production. Plus the final sound after bounce. Clean, smooth, crisp ya dig.

Studio One
I bought it pretty blind when it was on sale. Fortunately it fit like a glove and felt so smooth an intuitive. Real easy to do what I want, no real annoying fiddling around (issues I had with Sonar, Logic, Reason).
The only thing I wish(ed) it had was Ableton-esque clip launch feature, ironically I think they have added that but I've not upgraded to it.

I was very tempted to move to pro tools because being trained by Pro engineers who use it, I like aspects of its work flow. However I will add a lot of those pros also beef ProTools and are considering switching, but they're also very used to ProTools so.

(For the record, DAWs do not have 'a sound' so shouldn't have better quality from any of them - this has been proven countless times. Though I do remember feeling this wasn't the case when I started out)

Studio One - is one of the DAWs that i have never fooled around with, i know a few people that produce in it and it seems pretty cool. I'm sold on the production flow including creativity i get in logic.

As for as the "record" - you may be right on the technical end, but i hear a difference when i bounce out of logic vs pro tools. Whether I bounce out a mixed or raw version of a track, I hear a difference. Pro tools tend to me to be more transparent while logic does something to it where it sounds smoother even how it processes the stereo fields.

I do everything in Cubase, does everything I need, production and mixing wise all in a single session.

Wow Cubase?? is it still supported? I know at one point it was pretty competitive with pro tools.

@CTP_Gizzle then it must be something to do with your export settings or something, as DAWs null with eachother.

Of all the DAWs Ive used I would say that Reason has a "sound", due to the way it uses Refills, was the reason I switched to Cubase and started using vst's instead.

Yea, I would agree based on my experiences. I did use reasons before, but i used that as a rewired feature where i operated it within pro tools.

FL gosh dang Studio

I have the all plugins edition. I'm wierd and I don't like using third party plugins. I make a lot of melodies myself so I think it fits my workflow. I would try something else but I just don't see the purpose rn. I think I'm still improving.

I started out with FL way back in the 2000s, and the stock sounds were so ass. I found a way to be creative with it but that was a rough experience, because of that i don't think i can ever go back even though it has come a long way. My setup in logic to pro tools . I think my production pretty strong.

Wow Cubase?? is it still supported? I know at one point it was pretty competitive with pro tools.

Lots of movie composers use Cubase, still fully supported with new features on every new release, now version 15. Just copped Halion 7 as a crossgrade and that was well worth the money. I used Pro Tools years ago but prefer Cubase TBH.

That’s a sick setup! Thoughts on the SEQTRACK? I was pretty impressed with the launch videos but couldn’t justify another sampler/sequencer.

How thoroughly are you using the Verselab? My understanding is you can basically write and arrange full tracks on it.

I LOVE the SEQTRAK...Very fun with a lot of really great sounds built in. Plasticky for sure, but it is super fun to play and arrange on. I just got the Verselab, so I am just getting started with it. Ill let you know how it goes, so far, seems fun, just need to dig into it. (probably will make some videos).

I would say both since my mpc4000s all got ...weird after a few years. I thought hardware was the way, but alas its both..timing on the mpcs can't truly be emulated. That's controversial I understand but its true. Plus you have the pads. It's a mystery how to make grooves groove, which is the essence of music. Give me 3 patches with a strong groove and I'll they'll be better than a full 16 tracks of over production and fx.
