Hi

Im pretty pissed off right now, I like having nice reocrds to listen to that cool, but the main reason I got into diggin was to make beats.

THE PROBLEM
It seems as though 9 out of 10 record I buy only has one or two usable sounds.I dont want to have the kind of record collection where 20 records = 20 beats. I'd like to find the kind of records that have loads of useful sample material, that u can keep comming back to and find different shit.

Any ideas on how to improve my batting average so to speak?thanks

Right now im trying to focus more on rock and movie soundtracks, I also plan to get a portable that shoul eliminate me bringing home duds.

That's part of diggin'. But every once in a while go back & listen to the records you thought were duds. I tend to find sample material in records I thought were worthless originally. As your skills improve your ear for good samples will improve too!

I hope so cos having uninspiring records is very fustrating for a smaple based producer, thats why i know i gotta get a synth to compliment my sample use - for the times when im out of samples

I KNOW EXACTLY WUT YOUR TALKIN ABOUT JPEG.

My solution to that, is i get symphony records. Thats the best reference i can give you. I bought This box set of 6 Symphony records 1 1/2 years ago, and i still am finding hot sounds on it today.

Go get some symphony records.

Look for old records that use to put out back in the day called sound libraries. they used for tv shows and movies stuff like that, but they are mostly all themed and intrumental, and oh yeah really hard to find

Check your vinyl before you buy it. It's kinda pricey (portable turntable), but it will help you avoid that problem. I know Dj shadow swears by them and everytime I see him diggin, like in scratch, he's got one with him. I dont yet have one but it will come in handy when your in the record stores diggin like an inmate tryin to get out of jail. Ya feel me?

Thanks for all that feedback, im a peep out some classical shit but some of that stuff has the same problem as jazz kinda boring when used in a hip hop context.

But i just gotta make sure the record has the right kinda sound b4 i buy i guess (gotta get a handytrax)

yeah ive been peepin library record 4 some time now, yes there is some incredible stuff on them but most of them r useless.

JPeg,
Just to get more into detail, try finding european classical or symphony. America's symphony/classical has a lot of stuff you mightve heard on a commercial, and has a lot of stuff thats the same.
Europe has a lot of different innovativeness in the classical world.

German and Netherland Symphony's have worked best for me for the types of sounds i like. But the best way to learn is to dig for yourself.

why don't you try to do your own beats???

with all those synths and softwares you have virtual instruments to give you the possibility to do anything you want!!!

Sampling was mostly used before and is still used in hip-hop but man it's good to listen to one of your composition.

LOL yah right. come on dude.

I think learning how to flip sounds and recognize the potential of sounds is what you should work on rather than listening for that sound thats imediatley listenable (useable).

one of the main points of digging is to enjoy and appreciate the music you are trying to sample.
if you can't find music in a sample then digging wont be fun and ur beats will reflect that with weak chops or just str8 up boring/plain loops.

and most of the hiphop beats i hear that are not sampled are lackluster. more so than the sampled joints i hear.

The only sampling you do is from vinyl records? I hope im not messin myself up because I only used a few that were from vinyl. The majority I mess with is from stuff I would never be able to find on records....I'd like to get more into that tho.
