Hi, I'm new to fl 5 I'm use to making my beats on a fantom x by simply making my hooks and copying the sequence a couple of times to make my intro, & lyrics parts by taking some sounds away & changing up the beat then i simply tell it how many times to play each section. Is there a way i could get fl to copy pattern 1 to 2 so that i could make changes then do the same for pattern 2 to 3. so that i can simply paint in the patterns knowning that all my work within the sequence it self was done.

the way it seems to be laid out in the manual is you make your beat then in pattern 2 create your bass line then paint it as you go. i want to have a complete groove with all my parts in it. i didnt see anything that said click this to copy a complete pattern in the fl getting started.thanks

there's another easy way.

when you're using FL or any other program, you always have to follow one rule: KEEP YOUR SOUNDS SEPARATED. This was a tip I heard Just blaze give and it is so true. You never ever want to have your drums and bassline or your drums and melody (it can be any combo of sounds though) on the same pattern in the FL playlist.

So, lets say you've got your 8 bar melody in Patten 1 in the playlist. If you want to keep the melody at 8 bars, simply use the paint brush and paint it for as long as you want it to play for.

Within a layer though, like within the piano roll, lets say you want to take a 4 bar melody and make it an 8 bar melody (repeating once) before painting it on the playlist. Go to the piano roll, select all the notes you want to copy, go back to the "pencil" icon (i don't know if thats what its called...but you know what I mean, the thing you can draw notes with), hold down shift, and click on one of the highlighted notes and start dragging your mouse to the right...and just like that, you've got your melody copied and you can arrange it exactly how you want.

if your just trying to copy pattern 1 to pattern 2, click on the green light thats right to the right of the rectangular channel thing. Now right click on all the other channels green light things that you want copied. You should have multiple green lights selected, then go to edit click copy. go to pattern # 2 and click paste.

If I understood ur question right that should be it. If its not then post it again in more details i'll help u.

Sorry it took so long to get back and thank you HI-lo for the help and new way to try. And thank you 5th sequence that was exactly the answer i was looking for. It seems to be working so I just have to put in the time and see if any other ? arrive. but i would like to know doesnt it make sence to create a seq. and have all you sounds in it. then a 2nd seq. where you can change the drums up or add to for lets say the hook. that way in the playlist im just in my verse and hook parts rather then counting bars to know when i want basslines to drop in and out ?

It depends it's all on what your comfortable with. If you'd rather have all the instruments in pattern one (the chorus for example) and then take out some instruments for the lyrics (pattern two) you can do that. Some people prefer to seperate each instrument to its own pattern so its easier to listen to that instrument by itself and make changes. I seperate everything out in the end. Just easier for me to focus on whatever instrument I need instead of listening to everything just to change one thing.

i still cant get that piano roll down, for anything drums or playing basslines. i only get parts of what i played to play out and or it will play and then give me another 8 bars of blank space?

I think maybe I misunderstood your question originally..

what you describe here sounds like a lag between your midi device and sound card/computer, which I had a problem with for a while. If you've gone into record mode and played a bunch of notes out, but they come out incomplete and all messed up, then this is your problem (I'm assuming thats what you're describing in this post). You need to either buy a better sound card (one with ASIO support) or reduce the buffer size in general preferences...but you are going to have to do some testing, b/c reducing your buffer size too much will lead to overruns and equally messed up sounds...just play with it for a while til you figure out the right level and leave it there.

You need to fill out the rest of the piano roll. Whats going on is you either have too many bars in your time signature (can be found by >>options>>project general settings>>under time signature) or you're not filling out enough of the piano roll. When u go into your drum sequence or whatever from the piano roll and it gives you an extra 8 bars or so, just fill them out with more drums. Fill it out so when u play it, it loops. I have mine set to 64 actually, the biggest it gets. It helps cuz I can get mad intricate on the drums! But yeah, fill out the rest of the piano roll or reduce the number of bars in your time signature from the options>>proj. Gen. Settings menu

Hope this helps,

Peace!!

i'll try that, sorry again for the late responce its busy at work this time of yr and trying to learn fl. do you know how to get the piano arranger to give me different octaves it doesnt show a slider so all i can play is stuff in the middle? also ive been using the beat slicer to chop but now i see i need more presice control, i want to chop it where i need and keep it all on the same chanel like when u beat slice but they seem to give to many options what should i be choosing and i havent figured how to move the lines and audition. and do the samples also go to the slides beats folder? thanks in advance cisco

how do u use & whats the perpose of time shift. i want to try to make a track like kanye or dipset, have u guys ever tried a trk like that and what should i look to do. ie pitch shift, chop in fruity slicer, use the piano arranger or roll ? thanks in advance cisco

Can't speak on behalf of the kanye/dipset style tracks but the piano roll is different than what i think you're thinking of. load a fruity slicer channel and import your sample into it. Now on that channel, right click on and select send to piano roll. You should get something with a black background and green notes when u click them. This is the piano roll. I guess the other one is a piano roll too, i dont remember its specific name. Anyways, use that piano roll. Try just going all out and experimenting with different shit. Click buttons, adjust settings. Load the songs that came with FL and study that ish and break it down track by track. check how everythings layed out.

Ah.. i'll post some more stuff later hopefully some shit came up

Peace

lets say i set it up for a 4bar pattern (16 measures in the lil box) and i plot out the first bar using the drum arranger but i dont want to go and count blocks to get the other 3 bars in there. is there a way to copy them in? and can the metronome be set for just a 4 beat count before rec. starts? thanks

Hi-Lo: You still can have your sounds seperated even though they're on the same pattern. As long as their on different channels.

My beats often consist of 4 Bar patterns, with different variations. And you clone patterns by clicking the top-left icon in the playlist and choose Pattern > Clone selected.

im not sure i explained it correctly, but i'd like not to have extra copies of the same channel, just to extend the measure to the next 3. also the feel of the beats even with the swing is just not capturing my feel i can see why people say 9th wonders beats sound stiff and repetitive, im doing the same type but when i try to do stuff like dipset it never works.

I don't think you mean three copies of the same channel, but rather 3 copies of a 1 bar pattern so u get a resulting 4 bar pattern? What you should be doing is actually filling out the rest of the bars. You may not want to and are looking for an easier way to fill it out but you really just need to fill those last 3 bars in. If i'm understanding you correctly, you want to make a one bar loop and copy 1 single bar 3 times over to create a 4 bar loop? It's really not that difficult or that much more work to fill out the rest of it. Besides, you have more room to create variations and add life to your music instead of a 1 bar loop, looped 4 times which is still an extremely boring 1 bar loop no matter how you look at it.

Maybe i'm way off, but hope this helps.

having trouble with piano roll again, i dont know what i did differently but it was working now its back to playing the whole beat on one note, sounding like 1 loud kick. i dont know how to fix that cause i didnt do anything special when i thought i had it figured out before it just worked. what things do i actually need to set for the piano roll to except my pattern. i have it set for 32 measures also the samples i trigger using the korg microkontroller always sounds behind as if i release the key then they play can that soft touch be taken of so it just gives me the sound on beat cause it trows me off big time

hmm. So your microcontroller is being used just as a midi keyboard to control the sounds from within FL? And the problem is that you hit a key and nothing happens, but when you release it the sound starts? Explain what you mean by all the sounds play at once.

I dont know if i'll be able to help you too much with this because I havent had any problems using my midi controller with FL. I'd say go into the midi settings part and look around at all of the different options you have. There is one that controls velocity, i dont know if that'll help the release thing or not but its worth a try.

Wish i could look into it more but i gotta go,

Peace!!
