If you don't have the mechanics, no one will give a shit about how "musical" you are.

Hello, please take some basic reading comprehension classes. I can see that public education is failing in this country.

I never said producers come out of music school, I'm saying good musicians do because someone before said that "cats" come out of there doing it like their teachers told them to.

Boy has the thread gone off. To the original poster though, i would advise you to at least give classic's posts a little consideration. I pretty much agree with everything he has said, but at the same time you have to do what your heart is into. If you do a business degree which you know you wont enjoy, you will not be as motivated and could end up failing and wasting the money. However am sure there are business degrees that are centred around the music industry which you could enjoy more.

When i heard "hiphop production degree" i kind of laughed, but thats what people did when they introduced things like art at universities which traditionally taught maths and sciences back in them old days. Personally i think a degree like that would not gurantee you success in the industry.

On the other hand you have degrees like audio engineering, which i think have a much better standing, but its all up to you. Get some advice from your school/parents on careers . Its a very good thing that you are considering higher education, so do not let anything put you off. Higher education is a good thing, for example in my case, at our university, average starting salaries after graduating are around £24k which i guess is around $40k, not bad for a 3 year course ey

You really can't read can you? What a tragedy. I never said I'm going into any hip hop classes, but I am studying music at universities.

Anyways, it all depends what you want out of life. If you want stability, classic's advice is very good. Get a degree in something which will give you a good chance at obtaining a stable career. Unfortunately only the professions (law and medicine, and really only medicine) currently guarantee financial success in the real world. A business degree can amount to nothing. However if you're a big risk taker and you think really big, there's tons of opportunities out there beyond the normal 9-5 work day.

Music theory is cool if u have a specific purpose for it, but dont take music theory thinking that you will automaticlly become a better producer. All music theory does is explain the mechanic's of music and explain what most talented people already do naturally.

Dont take it just casue dre is LOL, you will get fustrated... If u have a basic understanding of music you can learn most of theory on your own

I agree with class. If you aren't naturally good with that stuff, it will seriously look like chinese to you. Even a lot of amazing musicians know nothing about theory yet a lot of it comes natural to them, and some are just terrible with it.

What you should do is study chord structures and you'll see what sounds good.

IMO i think you would be bettter off majoring in something more stable like busniess. Then you can get a focus in business entertaiment. That way you will have many more options becasue business can be applied to anything.

I think Class has the best idea here. Get a degree that will allow you to work toward a career in the music industry, but allows you to fall back on something if it don't work out. Take some courses in entertainment on the side, but these won't guarantee success in the industry alone because you'll need talent.

So good luck and don't listen to anyone that tells you a degree doesn't mean anything. It just doesn't guarantee a job. You have to make that happen on your own. and remember, sometimes, you have to be honest with yourself in order to ensure your well-being in the future.
