yall are probably expecting this to be some crazy piece of production equipment but...

http://www.mbira.org/

My X gave me one the other day. It came all the way from Zimbabwe (where they originate) too.

Seriously, they look like pieces of junk but yo the tambre of sound they produce is fucking DOPE! They got a hell nice sound with natural distortion (bottle caps) and resonance. Ive been playing around with it and have come up with some dope tunes and last night i recorded myself doing some freestyle playing on it and then put reverb on it and then put some drums behind it to see what it would sound like. Sounds crazy.

Anyone else out there play an instrument or learning an instrument or want to learn an instrument?

In particular, does anyone own or play any unusual instruments like the one you just saw?

I wanna learn how to play mad instruments but they cost too much so the only things i learn how to play atm are that which i find or are given to me.

word.

Yeah it's pretty abstract sound Maknbats. Its natural sound is like something you would only be able to make by putting some bugged out fx on a mandolin or some shit lol. its definitly unique. ive got a pretty dope melody that i can bang out on it well now. its gonna be an upbeat dancy drum n bass tune @ about 120 bpm. im gonna take this baby into the studios at school next thursday and do some recording of it.

found a goat skin hard drum (sitting in storage at my house) a couple of weeks ago too. it has a pretty nice sound and im slowly getting the hang of it.

one thing ive noticed about all these ethnic type instruments is that they seem to really hurt your hands! my hands were fucked up from that hand drum and now my finger tips feel like they got no skin on them from plucking the Mbira. but i got used to the drum so hopefully my fingers will get used to the mbira too.

Thats dope. You should sample that thing of you freestylin and post a beat of it. I wanna hear that.

I do lots of different shit, shit that aint even "real instruments". I use them glass coke classic bottles and fill em with diff amounts of water and play them. I got some different shakers and maraca type shits. I play the drums a lot, im crazy with that. I play the guitar. I aint real good with the guitar but i can play some riffs and some dope basslines on that. I can play the piano ok. But im takin some lessons in a couple months to up that skill. I play wit pots and pans and sample them and add fx and get some nice samples. I still got a trumpet from back in the day. I can play a couple pieces of some beethoven and some small stuff, but i cant play how id like to and i get discouraged with that. I used to play the saxophone when i was younger (played it in school) but i never got real good with it. I basically play whatever. I know how to play some other things too, but i just cant think right now.

I use the behringer b-1 ($100usd) studio mic. Its dope for recordin sounds and shit. I use it for vocals with my mc's too. The only thing i dont like is how much sound it picks up. Sometimes i gotta filter out some high-end and put a noise gate on it to make it sound okay. But it works for sounds.
