I think creation is a reflection of your mood and perceptions...

and I have the same problem... cant make a laid back song... not the ones I'd like to do... they are grimmy, dirty, club or anything else than laid back... that's why I'm learning about chords and all... so I can really compose a melody...
Oh for sho!.....But with everything already said aside....I do think that everyone is capable of creating whatever mood in their songs that they desire....Its more like placing yourself inside someone elses brain metaphorically speaking....Like, i for the most part make happy beats i guess u could say, but when i really want to make a more somber beat i just imagine what that would sound like in my head. Then i hum the melody out till i play it the way i thought of it....At that point things just fall together, but the point is i had to place myself in a mental space that im not used or accustomed to as much as the other.....I think it just takes some time getting used to, plus u gotta keep in mind most people have a completely different perspective of what dark or happy is in their book.

If you don't know how to play certain chords or you don't know what they sound like, I recommend that you go here : www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano this definitely helped me out in learning some new chords and how to recognize them. It also has scales for all types of exotic styles of music and so on. It even has a guitar section which shows you where to place your fingers to play whatever chord you want. Check it out!

break your old thinkin'

of course its all about how you play what you know, but most of all its all about how diverse you are in your own styles, patterns, and chords. NOT just with your actual sounds but most of all with your drum patterns!!! are your kits gritty? do you add effects to them? are you doubeling up your kicks and snares? maybe add a break beat with a low-fi effect in the background? and most of all, it depends on your tempo. you usualy dont hear a grimy neat at 100 bpm's. Find old Jazz albums and sample just a bar or two of a piano or sax and form the rest around that. get some vinyl static to add to the all around feel of the final product.

ahaha!!! well its true, if you select another type of sample you can do something totally different. The hardest part now is to "understand" those sample (that you may not like in the first place) so you can have enough creativity to flip them. Its okay to be wack for now.

But by the way O- H-Then nice link, it will definately help me to learn guitar chords. Good looking out. Thankyouuu

y'all got jokes

Yo! breakin up with yo chick, won't help ked! i did that and crazy dope, jazzy beats started flowin from the dome. Jedi mind tricks & RZA will only take you far! It's all about YOUR heart and how far your willing to let your mind wander in the process of production! There aint one thing that wont be a dope tool for you to use, such as: 1) understading symphony 2) rock chords 3) jazz progressions 4) certain parts of raggae 5) basics of playing drums, bass and most of all, guitar! Be mad goofy and wierd, but, if you have a dope sample backed up with raw drums then your good to go yo!!! If you sample something complex then make sure your bass and drums are simple, and if your sample is some what simple, then you got more freedom with how you lay your drums and bass line!

I dont think the sample is what makes a mellow beat... I heard the dirtyest, grimmy, hardest beats on mellow samples... it depends how you flip it!
Using a violin sample, for exemple can lead to both styles... depending on the drums pattern, sound, the other instruments you put on top of the sample, etc...

Very true, but the style of the sample is always a starting point if your making a sample based beat - A lot of the time you can expand or move on from that but sometimes some samples are just so evil you couldn't make a mellow, up-beat track if you tried.

im having a battle with my friend..... and we are allowed to use 2 songs to sample. He gave me Rock and Funk. I hateeeeee those kind of sample, and i would NEVERRRRr choose them to make a beat. But lets see what i'll bring... It wont be mellow, thats for sure. If my joint is hot, i'll put it in the showcase.

you right. the sample dont have nothing to do with it. it is always the instruments.
