Hey,
He means that the notes haven't been snapped to the grid in the sequencer on which the track was created.
What themucka is referring to is time signature: 4/4 is the standard signature for hip hop, techno, rock, etc.; more complex music genres use odd signatures like 7/8, 5/8, 12/8, etc, which are very difficult to mix with the standard 4/4 signatures on most dance tracks.

Well I mean look if you don't quantize that's great but for some reason or another other people can pick up on it.....don't ask me....I mean if it's within a reasonably accurate vicinity of the realtime clock when you recorded or the metronome then it won't be too bad but if you have a lot of tracks it's always good to quantize to the nearest "on" note on the grid or whatever you use...if you observe quantization you can actually adjust how close you want to quantize but even if its not completely matching the real time what it does is adjust your entire sequence to be sort of correctly spaced and nicely flowing but not necesarily perfectly matched with the grid......but like the Mucka said not unless you have a 1 track minded DJ fresh from the college of DJ rookies....he should be able to find the right spots to cut and mix anything with 2 beats...
Nick iz right - but to put it bluntly and simple - tha mucka said it pretty well....
Like in reason you can quantinize your notes - and all that does iz - if your shit iz out of wack (not on point with tha signiture your using basically)...you can highlight all of tha notes that you want to fix and then choose tha correct resolution/signiture and from there you jus hit tha quantinizing button and tha shit gets re-arranged to fit that signiture, etc.

don't have a problem with quantizing on the mpc because it does it automaticaly..on the asrx you have to quantize
I agree with bigD, yeah quantizing is important blah blah blah BUT only 2 things should stop it from getting played...
1. All DJ's will sooner or later run into a "GOOD" song that will totally fugg up a mix unless you got some skillz. For example, Doug E. Fresh's La Di Da Di. The beat is HOT and it's a great mix-in when you're showing your talents on the wheels...BUT if you don't know what you're doing and if you don't know when to use your fingers to slow or speed up the song, you can probally count on being laughed at.
2. the production is just so out of wack that nobody would want to play it and that speaks for itself but I haven't run across any HIP HOP that I couldn't work with.
I personally think that using the quantize function is smart. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't use it but I guess some have their reasons.

one thing to note is that if you use step recording it eliminates the need for quantizing, allthough you do wind up having to place your hits on different marks depending on the time signature...... which can be tedious.
