What do you think is the best recording/mixing software for home recording? I use cool edit pro now but do you think I should be using anything else?

He he he.... a little biased, but it truly is one hell of a program. And for the money, you'd be hard pressed to find anything else which offers the same ease of use and features.
For MIDI, though, it blows.

If your looking for sequencing along with a ton of others like synths, samplers, drums of course, loop players(rex files), then Reason is tha prgm. for you. Plus that program is really intuitive which i find to be very essential in being able to transend an idea quickly. As Holmz and V metioned - most prgm's are tha same for tha most part, but reaon will get you started automatically, and theres a ton of wonderful things it can do. Tha best thing about it to me though iz tha fact that its setup iz so conveinant that you can bust out your idea in minutes without tha complications of routing(simple procedures anyways), etc. But, if your shooting towards jus tha wave editing area/ multitracking...cool edit pro is fucking dope, as well as a program i jus picked up - (Magix)Samplitude 7...this prgm is really cool too, and im starting to have trouble deciding whether to edit in cooleditpro or samplitude these days - so either one iz good...Take your pick!

Hey,
For recording/mixing, Cool Edit is perfect, it has a ton of tools and editing power to make your tracks a lot better.
For MIDI sequencing, something like Sonar or Cubase will do the trick.
You'll need sounds as well: my personal favorite is harware synths, but you can get some really nice software synths and samplers which will do the job nicely. If you choose your software carefully, you can run these software synths from within your sequencer.
Effects: these will help enhance or completely warp your sounds. Programs like Cool Edit and Cubase come with lots of great effects...if you want to, you can buy 3rd party effects which do even more.
If you're recording vocals or acoustic instruments, you'll want a decent microphone and preamp. You don't have to break the bank, there are some pretty good mics for around $200.
And last (but not least), as good soundcard for your computer will serve you well. A good soundcard will let you record audio with a higher quality and give you low latency drivers so that you can play software synths with low to no latency. If you're serious about music, I suggest that you stay away from the Creative Labs/Sound Blaster cards or the one built into your motherboard. If music is something you're just trying to get into, a Creative/SB card will be just fine until you get more serious.
Oh yeah, some talent goes a long way, but you can't buy that...well, sort of!

But 4 the best wave editing,effects, n mastering hands down Sound Forge 6. Its hella easy, powerful n simple but only for editing.
4 multi-trak use Cubase Sx, CakeWalk, or Protools their all multi-trak-able but each has more in 1 area like Cubase has some hella klean effects, but Protools gives ya traks a smooth & sharp sound.

What's hot about Nuendo?
I use Cubase SX, they're both supposed to be very closely related, but when I look at the two programs side by side, they appear identical in function, different in GUI. I've heard from a lot of Nuendo guys that they're frustrated for having to fork out close to a grand for it when they could pay almost half for SX, and a lot of SX guys are mad because there are features in Nuendo which they want but can't justify forking out a grand for.
I don't know many Nuendo users, please tell me what's up...

Hmm, am I the only person that uses Acid Pro?? I've had just about everything, and Acid has been the only dependable thing for me. I had Cool Edit, but for some reason after I'd use it a few times, it would no longer work. I like Acid Pro because it automatically saves each take you record, so if your PC freezes or somethin, you won't lose everything.

If Acid or Windows crashes, it looks to see if there are any temp files left over when you rerun it; if there is, it rebuilds the session and you're good to go.
Cool Edit does this, and it also does Acid looping.

Why did you decide to go with Digital Performer 3 instead of Cubase or Logic? Just asking to benefit some of the Mac users here, I don't think anyone else here uses DP.

i own pro tools also but i think i got that because of the hype and im not saying nothing is wrong with it but i had a few problems every now and then with it and i wanted to look at other programs. i love the mbox just for the fact i can do things with my lap top and not ahave to worry about a power input so i wanted to stick with the hardware. a friend of mines was about to switch up and get a digi 002 because of his job needs. one thing i have learn about all these programs is they are very a like give a take a weakness here and there. My friend sold me his nuendo for the price of Cubase brand new and i got a chance to play with it before i got it from him. I think with cubase and nuendo they take avantage of Windows alot unlike pro tools. I like nuendo because of the ease of use it has. plus im a pc guy and the plugins on the vst and dx side are just larger then it is with rtas or whatever its call. i got a good package from my friend with nuendo. I been using alot of pro gear for around 2 years now and im starting to see its not about the name or the hype but what you will work best with. i like pro tools and i keep on my side just in chase i need to transfer something from a big time studio to mines but when it comes to my music i use nuendo just to answer your question "No i dont transfer songs from nuendo to pro tools but i do have friends who use pro tools so its a good thing to have on the side for me. I also dont like the way you cant use your pro tools le program with out the hardware so that means if my sound card breaks i cant do nothing untill i get a new digidesign hardware what happens if i want to change up to something else in the future non-digidesign? Some times i just want to take my lap top and a external harddrive to my girl house or while out the studio and i dont want to have to carry all that stuff with anything non-digidesign i can still do edits and set up efx.

ey i use acid pro and cool edit pro... ive noticed that as far as track layout goes... acid has the edge... and as far as recording vocals... cool eit has a crisper sound but acid is just an easier tool to work with.

i enjoy working the feature that allows you to monitor the tracks's progression as you record in acid pro... in cool edit i find that i have to record seperately and then attach the voclas to the track later on... ids there a better way to do this?
