The other week I was at a Native Instruments workshop and one of the things that was mentioned really made a ton of sense. The person giving the workshop mentioned that everyone should master their DAW. Really, this applies to anything.

When it comes to the DAW though, it makes sense because as we were discussing various programs, everyone had their personal preference when it came to what DAW they used. I've been using Cakewalk Sonar for ages (starting out with Cakewalk Pro Audio) and even though I've tried using Ableton, Bitwig, Cubase, and others, I just can't shake Sonar.

So basically, this kind of mindset can also apply to other things such as what hardware you use, or even what style of music you produce. That one is a biggie for me because one thing I don't like is when someone starts making a certain style of music because it's what's popular or what will bring in money (but that's a whole different issue).

My point is that everyone SHOULD master what they have. People fail to realize that we're at a point now where we have tons of options as to what kind of hardware or software we can use. But when dealing with software, it's hard because there's always a newer or better version out there. If you're content with using Fruity Loops and not FL Studio, so what? If you use only Reason to do all your productions, that's great too.

The bottom line is that you need to master what you have. Otherwise, you will end up spending so much time playing with and configuring your setup that you won't actually be making music.

Right?

This is a very good article.

I'll admit, I am guilty of not mastering FL Studio as much as I could. I'd say that 3-4 years ago I had almost mastered it...but all of these new features that have been implemented over the years, I have basically ignored. I'd always got the new FL Studio, figured out how to do everything I already did as part of my music workflow, and stuck to it.

You've inspired me to set aside a month or so to get used to all of the new finer workings of FL Studio...it might help.

Yup, everyone should know their DAW well. That's what I love about Ableton - it inspires me to mess with sounds and I've learn A LOT from doing just that.
