Im fully aware of the fact that people can take the audio that I put up on the internet, and its actually happened once in the past. Wasnt worth breaking a sweat over though really, whats the point? Its already stolen. But thats the point, be aware that its fair game.

Well the bottom line is... your music is never safe on the internet. It can always be jacked if you put it out there. When you think about, it's what we do every time we sample someone else's work. Some even think that once they flip it, it's theirs and nobody has the right to touch it...lol.

The safest way to shop your music is the old fashioned way of putting it on a CD and doing the footwork. I've heard that the Beastie Boys allow their work to be used however you want and KRS-1 also went down on the record as saying "you can sample anything that I got". It's still a good idea to go through the proper channels if you plan on selling it.

In any case, the purpose of this thread was to bring awareness and help me with an article that I'm doing exclusively for illmuzik.com so be sure to check that out on the home page. Thanks for your responses.

Honestly, I'm confused. Remember this is a music BUSINESS. As business how can you complain about people "stealing" - that's what business is all about. If you want to make money from your work then you should try to corporate angle - that's where the money is. Creativity is another issue entirely - music for its own sake. If you're in this to make money then it's hard to be angry at anything involving that aspect - everyone should know that coming in.

i get the artists/dj's i work with to do drops and i tag em with their drops, and i only send snippets of a verse with a hook, and the hook fades out half way through

Very good breakdown Sucio! So this brings me back to the original question with all that YOU said...What do you do (personally) to protect YOUR music? or do you have ALL this in mind and still just Fukit and put it out there anyway? I mean, you obviously know the consequences before you put it out there, so why get pissed afterwards?

@2Good - same thing, you knew the consequences before you uploaded it. What do you do to protect it from being jacked?

I put up some of my joints just to show my ability...

I don't put up everything...if I did....I would have hundreds of beats up on my soundcloud....

Vocal tags don't do shit...

A good way to protect your tracks...turn them into remixes using industry acapellas with your vocal tags on top....and just use small snippets...

Best way is copyright and ASCAP... Because that is the legal form of protection...

I do know that soundclick has this thing that if you upload something it's kind of a copyright thing...because it keeps track of when you upload it and it becomes "your intellectual property" I don't know the logistics of it.... But it was the thing about my beat getting jacked off of soundclick and used in a JR Writer track that became part of his Writer's Block mixtapes...... The dude that jacked the beat is not even part of the group anymore, rumored to be thrown out for jacking beats....

There was this producer out here in Orlando that went by "Grand Larceny" (oh the irony). He gave these dudes some beats to use for a mixtape saying they were his...turns out at least one of the beats was off an underground RA the Rugged man mixtape or something..... People will do a lot of shit to get some play and get their name out there....

Because many businesses fail due to theft...

Yes...you should complain about stealing, because that can take food out of your family's mouth.

If you just say "yeah..it's a business and you gotta expect that", you might as well just give them your paycheck, too.

You have to combat the stealing...

If you look at any business (doesn't matter which) the ones that are not crashing/failing are the one's that are jacking each others ideas.

I've been in business for a long time

You can either bitch about it or continue to move forward but its going to happen.
There are labels out there that pay their interns to search online and find stuff to bite/mimic (I know I was one of those interns). There are also licensing companies that ask for it. Of course they don't say HEY can you jack that new Chris Brown single for us we don't wanna pay x amount but we will pay you $2000 for it. They ask indirectly

i dont even try, anyone who wants my music and likes it can use it all they want, i just like making music maybe one day if it could make me money id be more serious about security but for the mean time i hope everyone enjoys listening or using my beats to the fullest.

The businesses that are wildly successful come up with there own ideas.

Think Jay-Z, or Warren Buffet they both do there own thing no matter what. To be an exceptional business you don't steal from others.

*cough* Bullshit *cough*

Facebook - used ideas from myspace.
Google - used ideas from other search engines around long before they were.
Pop Idol/X Factor/Timbuctu's Got Talent - Stole ideas from every talent show before it.
Just a couple Id thought Id throw out there.
And Im also getting a bit tired about hearing about Jay Z and Warren Buffet, I dont care for either of them, as much as they dont give a fuck about us.
As for them 2, its not what you know but who you know.
Jay Z was one of the biggest sellouts hip hop has ever seen, and I remember a time when selling out was a BAD THING. And also Jay Z has been swagger jacking and jumping on bandwagons for years.

Thats what I'm talking about! Why get mad as opposed to what? you being happy and NOBODY else wants your ish?...lol. Make music and have fun with it, when it's time for you to get serious about your craft, then go through the security measures, just don't post it on the internet.

@2good

Bad examples, google did some firsts with search that put them on top. Specifically in regards for the algorithms they wrote. Facebook had many more unique ideas than mysapce. And for your other example I don't watch those shows so I don't know.

As far as Warren how do you not like him? Him made his fortune based on what he knows. All the famous people he knows now are BECAUSE he is wealthy. He was a multimillionaire long before anyone ever heard of him. He also made his money by having original thought and doing almost the opposite of what everyone else was doing.

How is Jay a sellout. Seriously. Also what bandwagon has he jumped on? He was opposed to autotune almost from the beginning and he started his own label so he didn't have to answer to anyone else.

I think you need to read up a bit more on these two people before you criticize.

I dont think 2Goods that off though man, granted Facebook ended up pioneering newer/better/more dialed ideas of the business model but they still essentially cropped up with a variant of what MySpace had already offered so I see where he's coming from. Yes, their not identical...but they do/did have a ton of similarities, at least especially when Facebook first hit the scene before things like using their API for social bookmarking all over the net really occured, etc.

They basically took MySpace's status updates and injected them with sterioids...You still get a profile just like MySpace, you still share video and pics just like MySpace, etc...The genius on Facebook's part IMO is that they made things more personable for one thing, for example most of the time you find someone on Facebook you actually find them by their "real" name, not some pseudo alias, etc. Facebook lets you have whatever screen name you like but you still find people in a more personable way....and since they made status updates take the front stage essentially they made it easier and more accessible for people in your network to view that information immediately and very easily, whereas on MySpace you only had bulletins, that tiny text status update, or visiting another persons profile to really share a larger amount of content. Long story short, theres plenty of similarities.
