Eventhough this is geared more towards tech, trance type stuff... I imagine this being used in house, dubstep and even hip hop. Check it out...definitely a game changer imo.

This is awesome.....

It's a lot more hands on with the manipulation of sounds....

@odbarq - Yeah I'm sure that something like this will enable you to do things thats near impossible or a lot more complicated to do normally and I'm sure this will throw your workflow off a bit at first but I think once you get it, you'll get more proficient at it. I like the idea of it, I think it's pretty dope.

@Formant - yeah I think FL has a way of doing this as well... can't you do something similiar using Patcher? I just never went that route.

sorry hehe, not @ dac but odbarq

Max/msp has been a breading ground for artsy people linking any kind of hardware with sequencing, synthesizing audio and video. I dont mean musical hardware, also arduino and other AVR boards to input sensory object. Im not that artsy so i havent ventured in working with the likes though maybe some its fun to play around with arduino and max/msp in future and heres the key to software like this; i only know why i would use max/msp if i have a concept worth taking the effort.

Visual programming isnt different in its capabilities when comparing to sequencers/daws with a few exceptions of course. The main differences is that (for example) when building a synth you're not limited by the number of modulators unlike plugins. You want to make a 10 osc 14 lfo and 8 stages addssr, you can do that with max. Want to have video modulate to any of those parameters, you can do that with max, want to sync it to your mpc....

at Formant, Those aren't small things you listed, I dont even know what half the stuff you mentioned really means but it sounds dope...
Still i dont think anything will fullyb replace the pure joy and head nod rush of bangin on pads, everything else is just accessories to me...

consider it like this

Make a box, make it have 8x8 matrixed pushbuttons a la monome.
Add an arduino as a brain or logic controller.

There ya go..midi controller

Hook it up to max msp, here you can decide how to use the buttons on the box;

- use 8x8 drumpads (replace pushbuttons for mpc pads spares)
let it trigger an audio object in max which can be an osc or a sample.
- use it as a sequencer 8x 8 steps
- use it as a mixer, 8 channels with 8 levels (incremental steps 128/8 = 16 steps of volume per button.

You can even have a realtime chopshop which you mangle through and 8x8 matrix where each pad represents a cue(slice) point or use it to indicate start or end markers.

The artsy part is where non-producers replace the 8x8 interface with an array sensor to control audio or video. You wont just install the program, hook it up and bang away, like Logic you must create your own environment the way you want it or as envisioned for your project.

@ dac; Patcher applies the same UI principle but is limited to the available plugs where max lets you create pretty much any kind of synthesis(and much more ofc). Patcher does enable you create some exceptions that normaly couldnt be done as easily without.

This is isnt mumbo jumbo hehe, these are still just basic producing topics.

Sounds dope, but I know me. It will end up on my project table in the hell of abandoned experiments that is my garage.

hehe, i got the arduino to toy with, just good fun and the occaisional skull crushing puzzling of how to make things work. Once realised, i break it apart again lol. Its not something i need for studio or production but if needed i can make a custom device to solve a solution. Sometimes diy is the gold path hehe and the same applies for max msp. You dont need it, plenty of bread and butter alternatives.
