i generally do the bassline dead last.

i think you must know that a bad bassline on an otherwise good beat is like a smoothed out impala, dark blue with silver flake and velvet interior with dingy yellow whitewalls and no rims. it completely ruins it. the bassline should be viewed as the glue that brings everything else together. to me the best basslines compliment the rest of the track and do not overwhelm it. its the most important aspect of the beat if you ask me.

i have no methods for placing a first note, whatsoever. where i place a note depends on its interaction with the other elements of the song. i prefer them to follow the progression (obviously) and while sustained, singular notes that are held for the duration of each chord (listen to damn near any eminem beat) are generally boring, they can be effective.

to match up with the rest of the song, i will solo particluar instruments to see how well the bass line sounds alone with various elements. that always changes the dynamics of it.i literally just play with it until it sounds right. i have no musical training, and so my ears and gut instincts are my best friends.

it helps to know what the dynamics of the patch are- does it have midi control data for the mod wheel? velocity sensitive? if those elements are present, then it opens up a lot in terms of playing/programming.
because i misread it. i started this thread for blatant selfpromotion of my upcoming EP,

"Melancholy Cinema"

DUE OUT NOVEMBER 1ST! NOVEMBER FIRST! NOVEMBER 1ST! NOVEMBER FIRST!

it sounded like a good idea at the time.

seriously though, i just thought it would be a fun thread in contrast to the argument i just had.

The last question I asked you, would you answer those same questions, but in reference to Drums?

Did you know no man could kill Jesus?

benny- i make my paper in a 9 to 5, making sure the company i work for gets paid. my aim is to be making records for a living by the end of next year. i prefer neither bongs or blunts.

syn-i am perfectly fine man, this was mainly to lighten the mood some. you made some valid points about me, which was why i posted the "am i a jerk" thread. i function perfectly fine, thank you. its really not as serious as you may think it is (dont know, just saying). i'm cool and we can put it behind us and move on, and build.

ftdub, not so much to rectify my "mean" image, just to lighten the mood up. my "mean" image is something else entirely. that seems to be an issue within my personal life that i need to deal with on that level.

kevin- i make my drum lines first. in order: i search for sounds to build my kit, play around with different patterns, and then program in step.

i think you must first understand that drums are the very foundation of a hip hop beat- and also the most widely critiqued.

there is no method for laying out the first few hits or their placement... just start on the one measure!

i match the music to my drums, and then i match the drums to the music- more to the point, i get the main progression down, and add complimentary melodies around that. once the main melodies are in place, i alter the drum line to fit those melodies. everything is about ithe way the various elemnts interact together, if you ask me.

the greatest key for my drum programming is utilizing dynamics- things like panning. where you place things is important. panning can do much to enhance the drum section- say, placing an open hat on the left side, on the 16th note of a measure and a crash on the 1 note of the following measure, and automate the open hat to pan from the far left to the middle, while the ensuing crash automates from the far right back into the middle. i use tricks like this, i program snare rolls, and i use velocity and/or volume control on my hats/cymbals/tambs/shakers/etc to give the "swing" illusion. the greatest key is understandi9ng how to do these tricks in whatever sequencer you use. i will write an article on this for cubae, if anyone is interested.

and yes, i knew no man could kill Jesus.

why are you such a dick?

this is why.

i have never listened to t.i. i dont care for bonecrusher for anything, although the "never scared" beat was pretty hard. i do not eat my own boogers.

equality, the meaning of life (in my opinion..... lets not argue on this, if you want to discuss or have further questions on this, pm me or hit up my aim or yim)is to love God with all your heart, mind, and soul.... and to love both your brother and your enemy and pray for people. sadly i havent been living that- or even trying- for some time now.

i big up a lot of dudes taht i like.

i posted a thread for the roots new album, and encouraged people to buy it. i posted about how i like the direction that nas is going in, even when a lot fo people (people i get along with, at that) werent feelin it. i posted a link to the common (featuring kanye, i might add.) song, "the food" to show people something that i liked. i posted a thread on erick sermons new album, spoke nothing but praise for it and encouraged people to buy it. i also posted a thread for the halftooth records compilation. i posted a thread about how slept on i thought ayatollah was, and how he and pharoahe monche should do an album together becaus ethey are two of my absolute favorite artists.

you know what i noticed? none of these threads went past a page, i dont believe. i have posted just as much praise of artists i like as the guys that i dislike, but people arent interested in that, apparantly.

i have praised rjd2 to no end in several threads. i veen give credit to kanye when i do like somehting he does. for instance, i would say he has the best track of the new mobb deep. its different... and its dope. i didnt like "this way", because it sounded too forced to me. i loved get by and i even defended his blueprint beats to wings, who i consider a real friend. i give credit where i feel it is due. i dont like juvenile AT ALL but i LOVE "slow motion"- the beat, anyways. jay dee is one of my favorite producers EVER and i couldnt stand the jaylib album. i loved two tracks, liked one, and couldnt stand the rest. i say this because even my favorite artists have moments that i dont like- taht doesnt mean i am "hating on" it, it means that i dont automatically dig something because of the name behind it. i call it as i hear it. i give props where i feel it is due, ALWAYS.

i say i dislike kanye or eminem, and it results in 2 pages of arguing back and forth. i post on how great erick sermons album was, and its done in a page, maybe a page and a half. my ayatollah thread had maybe 5 posts, and i think guevara and myself were the only guys who posted in it.

ya'll will only notice when i say something negatve towards something you like. or when i say something that you dont agree with politically/religiously/artistically/etc.... those are the thing that you notice.

im not complaining, but i am pointing it out in light of the question. its just the nature of people- its like the saying, good news isnt news.

i big up a lot of artists. all people pay attention to is the "hate", however.
