no, not hits like a hit single, i mean hits..... stabs. something that just, uh, hits. real quick.

i have tried messing with various attack settings, releases and decays and all taht but i have had no success. can someone break down the science of this please? it is actually essential for my newest track, for it to do what i envisioned for it. i am trying for a good, quick, intense organ hit or maybe a string hit... but the organ fits the sound better.

any ideas?

If you want a short stab/hit whatever on a synth then you should use a attack probably best at minimum, decay for as long as you want the full sound to continue, and the release for how long it takes to fade out, so for a stab the release should also be pretty short too i guess. this is just what these controls are, attack is how long it takes to get to full volume, decay is how long full volume continues, and release is how long the sound takes to fade out from full volume.

edit -> btw, if you want an organ hit you will need an organ that lets you put a percussion or hit in it, organs dont hit by themselves. They always begin soft no matter what adsr settings you use. Theres a couple of vst synths out there (free ones) that can make exactly the kind of sound you're looking for. Organ hits are used in club (house) music a lot, i can make you an organ hit sample if you want.

yeah, i know all those things... and thats what i am doing, but the hits just arent what they should be.... i want them to hit HARD.... but thats what isnmt happening. i want them to be forcefull, so it sounds like it should have to do with the initial attack....

waldorf attack is wicked for that shit
for analog sounding stuff anyways.. try to get some motion in the sound with the attack and decay.. u dont want an instant attack, but very short.. so it sounds like a hit and not just a beep...

otherwise else i would sample something from an orchestral cut, or some brass.

huh...

hits and stabs aren't most of the time samples? I mean, you can find a good vst with stabs patches (layers of samples) like the Hypersonic from steinberg so most of the time stabs are samps. Anyway every instrument, synth or vst are made of multisample so its always sampling. I dunno find some big band music or look over internet just type '' free stabs sample wav hits'' and you should come up to something.

automation (in Reason) is another form of decay if you use it properly.

if you want your organ to hit hard, selct your organ, turn the volume up as high as possible, set attack to 0, set decay to anything, then set the volume automation so that the volume is full when the sound hits then cuts off gradually but rapidly. make a quick decline in volume. or you could make it so that there is no decay whatsoever, just a sharp cut off point, then add a bit of reverb to give is some smoothness.

another way to make it hit hard is to place it on a kick or a snair. and you could also place another sound over the top of it for extra emphasis. a good example of this is rjd2's beat on Deadringer for the song called The Final Frontier feat Blueprint.......the emphatic stab is impossible to miss.

hope that helped

Cold Truth:

I know exactly what you desire.

You want a Sonic "Exciter" plug in that heterodynes frequencies (excites upper-range frequencies) psychoacoustically. That way the sonic stabs sound "harder" with more "power." Imagine "In Da Club" hit string hits being controlled from "soft" to "hard." The sonic exciter plug-in lets you do that.

Steinberg makes an exciter, as well as BBE and Waves. Check out their websites for more details.

Sincerely,
God

Or you can just read my post, you need an organ with percussion abilitys, the link i posted has this. Its the single percussion hit organs that make it hit like you want to, plain and simple. I know for a fact this one does that because i use the damn thing for exactly what you want all the time. There are presets in the link i posted to you, probably including a 'club' hit like you're looking for. Shouldnt be too hard to figure out how it does that by looking at the preset.

acebeats-
people who incorperate hits and stabs usually use samples, and i have a collection of orchestral hits... but not with the sounds i want, and besides i am trying to learn how to program my own.

spin-
i am working hard at it.

dysfunktion-
i already have an organ module, and a very good,if not the best one, at that, complete with percussive patches. still not what i am looking for, i dont need new instruments as it is a programming issue...

which at least at first glance,

God and Mr Messenger have given me the best advice thus far. i do have a waves excter, god, and i will use that in conjunction with the messenger's tip, which i can still do with the cubase automation. thanks, guys.

Sometimes what I do to create stabs is the following:

I use a 6 bar drum pattern.... On the first 4 bars, I repeat a mellow/smooth 2 bar sample (can be piano or something not too hard sounding) and then on the last 2 bars I chop a string sample with a noticeable pause to create the stab affect.... works all the time for me.....

Ok, one thing i did once to build a stab, i used many instruments from reason: trumpets, horns, tuba, etc. Then i exported the file, opened it in a audio editor and chopped it to do a stab. Next i re-imported it in nn-19 sampler. It worked well.Cuz i know wut you mean it's hard to find those instruments that get real hard attack when you play with the attack parameter. Most of the time it plays fatser in time with your note but not harder and stronger. But like i said try to find Steinberg Hypersonic you,ll be surprised how the velocity change of the instruments. when you play hard with velocity with a guitar for example, the string snap like a guitar would do. It's cool, same fro strings and brass too.
Check it out!

I would suggest choppin it up like this if you can. I use pro tools. you can lay a grid play any instrument or synth and chop the sound so it lasts the duration of a quarter note. then layer the shit out of it. play the same instrument in a different octave and chop it the same way and drop it on top. or even several different instruments even. but if you want a clean String or somthing and you want more punch I would Throw an 808 behind it. or, even better, put it on top of the kicks already in your loop and throw an 808 on top of all that. itll add hella bass while being somewhat disguised in the mix. also if you dont want the big boom hit then you might try to do some eqing... im gonna try to get one of those exciter things tho to try it out..

Do it like Acebeatz!
Multisampling (make a trigger) and attack are the most important things to get powerful stabs.
