ummm gotta disagree.

a producer should ALWAYS do the thing that they do.... that they are comfortable with and that theydo best.

besides, the GREAT artists always do what they do in a way that is unique to themselves, even if the particular sound/style gets played... pretenders tend to weed themselves out and have short careers anyhow.

how is everyone copying the style? because... they sample soul?

do we forget that his drums and his percussion are a part of that overall sound?

and, if a guy wants to make his beats sound like his favortie producer, i say go for it.

taggers often learn buy using their favorite artists work as a starting point... guitartists learn by playing songs of their idols in FULL... piano players learn by playing fur elise and happy birthday...

and these are templates, starting points, kanye developed his current style from the supreme clientele album.... the lines go back.. athletes model their games after their idols...

the bottom line is that in all walks of life people begin their craft by using their own personal greats as their starting points, and the great artists will always leave their own mark. How about all of these generic, orchestral underground beats I here on here? Aint nothing that any of us do that hasnt already been done, and if it happens to be somebody large that did it so be it... somebody else emulating another artist dont hurt yuo any, and most people take that an develop from there.... what they eat dont make you shit, and how they go abuot learning and gettin their game up is their business.

OH shyt a moderater fight,,,,,kinda on the fence on this argument....i think it depends on whats ur reason is for doing that style...If u doing it because Kanye is doing it then yea ur wack.....but if that is truly the way u make beats maybe even befoe Kanye got big than push on I mean Just do it Heatmakers do it, and RZA did it before all of them

Hell Yeah!! It's about time somebody gave RZA his props!! He was doin' that ish long before anybody knew who the hell Kanye was! Thanks J Rilla. If Kanye can copy a style and get loot why not anyone else? I agree that it is okay to emulate your favorite producer. It's a way of learning new styles and sometimes you find your own style in the process. But I have to admit that the chipmunk thing is gettin' kinda played. As far as old soul goes; that will always be a source for samples because most people know the songs and the samples make the track seem familiar.
