Aight peep it

I started making beats in 99 with a computer and gradually moved on to hardware and sampling.

I currently have all of 23 records in my collection I started diggin for vinyl jan 03.

Right now i aint feeling my beats, is it fair to assume that as my collection gets bigger I will improve as a producer or should I be able to make loads of hot shit with the 23 records I got now?

Basically the point I'm making is I tend to blame alot of my beat making short commings on the fact that I have limited records, is this a valid excuse?

or should I think about finding another hobby lol, ( ima make beats regardless)

when you only got 23 records your sample library is limited so you keep on getting back to the same old samples.
there are records in my collection that I bought for only one little sample or "maybe I can use this one day for something."
you should def. get more records and they don't have to be expencive.
sometimes I go into town with 50 euro's and try to get as many records as I can get and there not "classics" but always usefull. you can find breaks in strange places.

you probably should expand your sampling source, cause hearing and using the same samples over and over can be a killer to inspiration...

dont sample from records because you think you have to, sample from records because you want to. i love sampling the drums only, from chilite records especially and some 45 soul records. i started of on vinyl but realised i was searching for a sample and wasnt having much fun @ all. i dont like speaking outloud on it much, but all my samples come from movie score's, i grew up around all that soul music kanyne or mf doom sample and i finding samples on from songs you heard isnt hard at all

btw, yes you are wack because you have pleny of doubt that your not going to get better.

my man kool keith started out producing with ultramagnetic and not untill recently on mathew, he thought his shyt was good enough to put out. and if you dont know what to look for when buying vinyl its gonna be hard on you, don t use samples that soudn good, you samples that inspire you

no its not a valid excuse

with twenty record you should be able to find enough samples to make about 1 or 2 beats.

but yo this whole not enough records thing is irellevent.

download some sounds off the net or get some sample Cds.

theres nothing stopping you from getting sounds

if you are still having problems, then come tell us

yo, ask friends, family members if you could by there old record collection, scour the classifieds for people with album collections for sale, my record collection I have for different purposes, some for breakbeats, some vocal snippets, some musical sounds, I needed a crowd cheering so I sampled that off a record,

Importance of sampling: I brought a EPS 16 + sampler after using just a keyboard and boss dr-5 drum, with a synthesizer you are limited by the sounds on the board and your ability to tweak them same with the drum machine, with a sampler or sampling drum machine you are not limited to any sound, you could sample the world leaving you with an infinite amount of sounds, if I want an organ I would grab an al green album and find a spot where the organ is by itself sample it and across my key board in different pitches is an organ, you have to sample in hiphop period, no getting around it!

1st of all let me say thank u all for ur responses

I am still looking to get a synth, so can attempt to make something close to the sounds i want despite not being able to find the right sounds on records.

I used to sample off Cd's and from other odd bits of software, the problem is not finding sounds. The problem is finding records that have enuff open sounds that r in keeping with the musical vision i have for the type of beats i wanna make.

Messenger - I have made hella beats, but alot of them dont have the right vibe stylistically due to what i feel is lackluster uninspiring source material.

jnxe- lol I do have confidence in my ability to improve, and feel i will do so

i gotta say i have been trading in my records for different records so the next batch of beats r set to be better than the last, but for anyone who cares to listen this is the story so far www.offpegbeats.net

i feel you jpeg.

obviously a dope sample is better than a wack sample no matter how you flip it.

TIP: check the newspaper classified for peopel who are offloading their wax. old poepel think there is no such thing as a turntable any more so they get rid of their shit. take it off their hands for cheap.
