Yeah, it comes down to personal pref. unfortunately, even tho i know thats not the answer you rlooking for....
Personally, i like to usually drop a light reverb on my snares....I dont like to drown them, just use enough to add that lasting flavor so to speak....I tend to not use entirely "wet" reverbs since that tends to take too much focus off other drum parts in the mix, so my shits usually around the middle, like 1/2 wet, 1/2 dry, but it all depends on the snare....What i also like to do is, Gate and then EQ the snare within the reverb (this perstains to if your reverb is advanced enough to offer all these features in one unit)....See, cuz if u EQ a snare outside of the reverb, your actually eqing the snare....What im doing is EQing the reverb, so that the reverb only interacts with the given sound at the freq's i choose.....
Hope that helps a bit....
Cash also mentioned something you can do, even though, its more pertaining to tuning, which is to change the pitch of your drum sounds, ie. Snare sound...and also layer other "partner" sounds with the first snare u choose....i do this as well and it helps to add a more realistic and full character to your sounds.....
Tip: Also try a "Spring" reverb on your snare sometime....If you got a good reverb that shit is tight as fuck with the right tweeks.....
