The little trick I go by is to layer the drums by two's. Take one booming bassy fullbodyed bassdrum and layer it with a fast hardhitting bassdrum. Then it's just a matter of turning levels up and down on the 2 channels to get the satidfactory result depending on the typ of sound that your after.

Easy trick.

i always compress everything. but most of the time you would never know. i think light compression on a layered drum along with matchin envelopes makes a layered kick sound much better and much more natural then if you only layer them and thats all. to me there is a line bewteen sounds layered together and then sounds layered together to produce a new unique sound.
