Hey, I just started a project that is nothing to do with hip hop but I get to add my touch to what the other instrumentalists are doing i do all of the percussion and fx, this is my 3rd project, I finished 2 before that are not hip hop and they are still selling on Amazon pretty good, they were hip hop yoga projects, 1 about a year ago the other 2years ago, a chick asked me to do for her yoga studio here in DC, i mentioned it before awhile back, then about 2 months ago I saw Russel Simmons of Def Jam on TV talking about this big hip hop yoga project, anyhow this new project involves a mamba, a lady with lyrics, singing and other vocal pieces, and afro cuban music, I was wondering if any of you listen to Kompa boukman eksperyans, or Orishas underground (this has a lot rhythms that are in gogo too)....hit me back, this project consists of 10 Haiti folk songs and some original music...anyone ever listen to Afro Cuban or mambo music...??

You gonna do some kompa? Nice.... I'm haitian too.

Actually, Boukman Eksperyans is Rara music that has to do with the voodoo culture. I wouldnt touch that shit with a 10 foot pole.

Actually, Im wondering how you got that gig?

Some info on Rara:
Rara celebrations occur every Christian Easter and the festivities take place each weekend during Lent. Rara is not just one festival, many towns stage their own Rara celebrations, usually staring in the countryside and heading towards town picking up merry revellers on the way. The festival culminates in the various city centres, where up to 1000 band members at a time can be performing. Although this looks chaotic, the Rara band members actually have to follow a strict code of how, when and where to dance. Rara reaches climax when the salute is performed, an intense dance performed by a lead male.

But (if you want a suggestion) if you can compose latin jazz and cuban music, you'll have no problem with ZOUK.

Zouk is not the same as kompa, but it comes from it... look for Slai, Alan Cavé, Nichol's (P-Gyal knows more about it than I do actually)... Zouk is like the electronic counterpart of kompa and it comes from guateloupe and martinique...

Edit: If you're really looking for haitian folk sound... look up african beats and mix it up with simple basses and percussion... (actually, I guess recording the real instruments would be way better, if you can find them... A Djembe, a boula, etc..., cuz it's all about percussions, as I guess you heard)

On that site, you'll find a partition and some samples of basic rara beats

Latin percussions... like cuban?

You should look for african percussions instead... the vibe is not the same at all, Rara sounds raw, unpolished, and even out of tone sometimes (it's really peculiar...)

Boukman is an old group (like the standard in rara...) but most rara today sounds raw...
