a few tips:

if your working in 24 bit, convert directly to mp3 (instead of converting it after it's been converted to 16 bit wav/aiff). many M.E.'s recommend this to avoid any conversion fuck ups

make sure your track doesn't have any intersample peaks before you render it and before you convert it to mp3. this is important

if you're going to be using the mp3 format a lot, learn about what it does to specific freq. (i.e, which ones get cut off). base your mixing choices on that knowledge. it's more work but having separate mixes is a good idea. if you already do this for radio edit, t.v edit, no chorus, etc, having another for the 'net specifically or mp3 shouldn't be too painful.

doesn't hurt to try different encoders to see what's best for you.

Thats wassup 7th, I started at 16bit, then went to 32float, now I'm testing at 24bit (all at 128kbps). I think a good place to start is when you recommended learning exactly what freqs. are loss when converting to mp3. Thats makes sense and I hadn't thought of taking that approach. I did drop my peaks in the -3db to -5db range before rendering which seemed to help as far as clarity but when I converted it to mp3 it still went from great to garbage. I'm gonna try it again after finding those freqs. that I'm gonna lose and stay away from them as best possible. I believe that will work out fine. I'll let everybody know how that turned out. Thanks again.

EDIT:
Damn I knew it was bad but didn't know it was this bad...geez!
