There's been alot of talk about Sampling other peoples music. Here's my opinion on that...I think SOME songs simply shouldn't be touched at all. Mainly some of the Old School beats by legendary Artist like Run-DMC ( Sucker MC's beat), and then some of the R&B legends like Barry White or Al Green. My point is this...if someone decides to get permission to sample a classic beat for their new song...please, please, please don't fugg it up! Mary J. Blidge ruined an Al Green song and on top of that...she named it PMS! In my book, she should have been sentenced to serve 10 years fed time in R&B prison! (I'm not trying to piss any of her fans off but that was one effort that sucked (in my opinion.))

Then on the other hand...Mobb Deeps re-vamped version of "White Lines" was so HOT that I liked it better than the original beat. So once again, I think Artist and Producers should seriously put some thought into what they are going to sample.

P.S. I know somebody out there liked PMS and don't get me wrong, I like Mary J. BUT I think that she should have left that one alone...give me your thoughts on "SOME songs simply shouldn't be touched at all."

Yeah good points. One thing I really hate is hearing these shitty R&B groups sampling classic Hip-Hop tracks like South Bronx, Top Billin', etc.

There should be a limit to what songs should be sampled because you're right - most artists don't do the original any justice.

I really don't care that people use Run DMC's old beats...when they let dance and techno people make wack remixes of them anyway...it's like they wouldn't say no to anybody...just to get paid...and their Crown Royal album sucked so much that they shouldn't have put it out. Yes, they have made some classics that I will always love...but I have little respect left for them to care who uses their beats.

However, P. Diddy should have stayed 100 miles away from Flash's 'The Message'...that's a true, great classic that shouldn't be touched...

to me -- if you can't create something original from a sample, then it speaks enough about your true talent -- now some people touch old stuff just to bring it back -- but i don't know about that either

hmmmm the truth has already been spoken. my services are not needed for this thread.

haha just messin around.... yup, i got to agree with you all..... some things shouldnt be touched. well, let me rephrase that: touch it, remix, sample, chop, remake WHATEVER YOU WANT, but do not- DO NOT release it to the public unless you have done the original justice. i suspect i wasnt the only one pissed off when everybody and they mama got together and remade "whats goin on" after 9/11....

by the way, as that "prince of thieves" thing- the soundclick site that shows all the original songs.... that was a real eye opener. i cant beleive ehow many complete, blatant jacks that have occured within hip hop. i give props to ayatollah for his sampling of "the long and winding raod" on my life..but kanye west, man, that was horrible. he just jacked the whole song for girls girls girls. i have a hard time respectng a producer whose hits are complete lifts. its p diddy all over again, the roc style.

Sample it or get busy making UR own vinyl

As much as I can't stand sampling, hip hop music is nothing without it, you had better have some good creativity and be able to form good melodies on your own then and on top of that come up with something different every time (and yes resampling your own stuff is aight too), it is next to impossible to make hot, attention getting tracks, you would be surprised at the number of hits that might not even appear to contain samples that do, all the way down to a kick, bass or snare snatched from an LP but just cleaned or dirtied up and filtered..you know that is theft too and just as bad as sampling a complete melody, most drummers never see credits where that's concerned..LOL.......I say that if you can make it sound good try it, I don't agree with the off limits bull though, if its on vinyl, cassete or whatever its open season on that getting put into one of my banks I don't care what song it is ya know, a sample generally is a small part of the overall production, you should be building the overall drum pattern, bassline and other track fillers......but please make it fit with the sample.....I do believe that most of the samples on that soundclick site and their implementation were easily identifiable and blatent which means more than likely there weren't actually stolen but more than likely cleared and given album credits and the original performers where mashed off a nice check for their contribution, hell the thing is for the groups that made most of those old vinyl masterpieces they won't usually say no to getting paid money off of something that probably hardly pays their water bill nowadays when they get their quarterly checks if any....

I've checked sites like Sample FAQ etc for a long time now and have as a hobby tried to obtain each and every song mentioned and from that I've learned that most songs are straight ripped of an old song...I was really surprised years ago at how many songs were actually samples...and disappointed with some people too. I think I have yet to find a Dre hit that isn't straight jacked of an old song. Previously I've been making most songs from soundbanks/refills etc, without sampling...but seeing how things are going down I've started to look for samples again...apart from Neptunes and Timbaland that obviously seems to be the way.

Timbaland samples but you can hardly tell. If people are going to sample it should be that way, Little stabs from things. Not entire loops i hate that shit. I hate when people make a beat and its just some looped drums and a looped sample and they looked at as gods. WTF.

man, tim is the most original producer out there. i usually hate the artist thats on em (except alliyah..) but everything he makes seems to be great. who else could turn godzilla into a hit single???? i dont even like mainstream radio, but credit is due with this man. who cares if they play it over? that means nothing because they didnt create the melody, so how does that make them a real producer as opposed to one who samples straight? there are so many holes in your argument its rediculous.
