I was just wanderin if anybody else ever feels that their voice sounds.....wierd when you listen to it. I dont mean if other people say its weird I mean does it sound wierd to you, I always think my voice is squeeky, high pitched, and geeky, it seems like when i listen to myself I only hear the mistakes I made so its hard for me to just sit down and listen to sumthin I made but everybody else says it sounds good so i dont let it bother me too much what about yall?

Hey man, I think it is a very common symptom. Same thing as hearing yourself in a home movie for the first time. Your vocal chords are so close to your ear drums that your own voice sounds very different to yourself when spoken. Ask some people you really trust, tell them you need constructive criticism and also point out some of the flaws you think you hear and see if they agree. It is still hard to totally believe you're peeps cuz they don't want to hurt your feelings; so, make sure you let them know that you want no lying.

P.S. - And I can see how Wings would say that, Dose could very easily be described as squeeky, high pitched, and geeky and you probably wouldn't be to far from the truth.

Goldy_C: Dose One is a member of the ANTICON crew. the reason i've mentioned him is because he is often described as "queeky, high pitched, and geeky". let's say that he got a special voice...
i must add that he's a talented individual, with a very unique style of his own.

yea, realized I might have sounded a little negative about Dose. He is definately a talented individual and have seen him live a couple times, but his flavor is definately not for everyone. Check his solo stuff or side projects such as Themselves or Deep Puddle Dynamics, but definately give it a listen before you buy as I must emphasize that a lot of these cats don't exactly have what could be called "mass appeal."

P.S.- I always wonder if he is running FX on his voice.

Yea, I've seen them too, I was just saying I couldn't tell if the Mic was running through any FX. An FX box could have been hidden somewhere but I don't remember that well anyway.

yeah that could've been done, but actually I doubt it, cause i also spoke with him shortly and he really got a light voice, not as light as he is rapping but i guess it is like Nine, if you ever heard him talk he isnt as deep as he is rapping, maybe dose got the same thing but then his voice becomes light and squeecky..
Also besides that i heard some scribble battles with dose and there he also has a light squeecky voice, i doubt that in a battle they gonna setup a fx box for him...

@goldy: dont know how long you are mcing, but when i started of emceeing i had the same problem, you will learn controll your voice better along the way and it will get a little deeper along the way. Just hang in there and just let it motivate you more!

Personally, I hate my voice on a mix, but everyone who hears loves it so it doesn't bug me. In lots of songs, I will process it a bit to cover it to my own ears =)

Problems i also encountered for myself was like knowing when to breath, timing etc... But practice and listening to your recordings can tell you a lot about your mistakes. And it is good you notice them, so you can make a change.
And dont be too scared to rewrite some of your old shit so it flows better.

i think every mc thinks he sux for every once in a while. you know, i like the style of my boys more than mine, n its the self other way round. one thing i have experienced is, dont try to sound to different, just try to spit as clear as possible, everything else will make sound it unnatural, and if u aint a crazy motherfucker like busta rhymes, dont try to sound like busta rhymes because you will never ever.

the more training you spent on the mic, and i dont mean just freestylin with your boys, but with the headphones on, listening to what you wanted to do, and what it finally sounds like, the more the very special herbs of your personality on a track, will develop.

4 sure there are a few boys and girls that are more gifted than others, n they drop their first line and everybodies like"whoo, thats (sounds) on point", but man, there are mcs out there which are hella dope, but you hear that its trained. nice lyrics combined with a clear presentation evolve into one thing -> niceness

pep loves hella nice

illogics nice

immortal technique s nice

sage francis is nice

kanye west s nice

but do they have outraging voices, i dont think so

plus, a bit compression on tracks does a lot of effect

my oppinion, peace

I've been rhymin for years... I use to feel that way, like my voice sounded crazy.. The best trick to solve this problem.. Don't say anything..... lol

But foreal try this, record your song and don't listen it for a day. Then come back and listen to it again, if you still think it sounds weird maybe it does... Or maybe you'll never be satisfied with your sound... I do this and it works fine for me.. I'm not on my own D!ck or anything, but sometime I amaze myself, when I hear a track back after a few days... Don't listen to your songs so much.. Cause your always gonna find something wrong. Get other peoples opitions... and not your friends, unless there really honest with you.

"If you look at food to long you'll find something wrong with it, but if your really hungry, you'll just except it and eat it".

Food usually tastes better that way.
