Hahahahaha! Naw mang. I wasn't trying to knock the mpc. Funny.

I still might end up getting one just to have the best of both worlds. But why is the 2000 so cheap and the 1000 cost almost as much if not more? I thought the models got better as the number increased.

Options, Operating system, size and date of release! I know numerically it can throw you but the 500 and 1000 came way after the 2k. The 2k drop'd in the late 90's and check it.....the 3k came before that!

Here's the order:

* 2.1 MPC60
* 2.2 MPC3000
* 2.3 MPC2000
* 2.4 MPC2000XL
Then the re-release of the 3000
* 2.5 MPC4000
* 2.6 MPC2500
* 2.7 MPC1000
* 2.8 MPC500
And soon the MPC 5000

I believe the 500 & 1000 is a slimed down version of the 2500. In other words people wanted some of the abilities of the bigger MPC's without out the cost and the 500 and 1000 are more mobile!

They were stoopid to make the 5000 $3500..
If you really want one I recommend the 2500 BUT you can get the 1000 and and then buy the jj os and it will pretty much operate like a 2500 I hear.

Oh and your right about the file names, you cant have em too long or your screwed..

I have been producing for 4 years. I started on the 2xl and built my setup aroud it. Start with one thing and learn it well. I think that's the disadvantage of software u really to have to learn it inside out to use it decently...what ever u choose just stick with it and make beats. Dont get caught up in gear talk b.s

U ever notice that thw gear/software/hardware sluts always have the whackist beats? There is a reason for that.

Preach...dudes are reallllly sleeping on that program! It's so simple and user friendly that's it's actually hard to grasp. Mentally you just feel like it should take so much more work. Until you slow down and retrain yourself you may never catch on to it.

3500 is was the listed price when it was first announced by the way.

No problem....I've been "under the weather" myself. I fixed my MPC and cop'd some other non essential gear for now. I may do the mic pre and mic the middle of next month. U did miss a sell though! lol

The issue revisited.....

I posted this in another forum......

The orignal poster:
"Once you get a process worked out (sample, loop, chop, adjust, create program), chopping samples is very easy. You need to use your ears
but once you have the method it's actually less trouble than messing with Recycle or whatever. Read the manual and be sure to use the play to,
play from and loop pad options. Once you master this, you will be flying. "

Ominous Red:
I have been looking for this question and answer all through this forum and many other forums with no luck. But you have saved the day.

I was gonna just post the question as a new thread but I didn't want to get roasted for being a noob and your thread pretty much answers everything I was wondering about as far as the MPC goes compared to PC production. I use Logic Pro, Reason and Recycle. But I just felt that the workflow for the MPC had an advantage over computers. Sometimes my ideas get lost in the steps of getting a loop ready in a computer. I assumed that the MPC's workflow kinda helps your get around this because like you say, once you understand how to get around, you are relying on your ears instead of fiddling with software features. However, I will say that the automation in Reason is unfukwitable.

On top of that, after chopping loops and them experimenting with them in Recycle and Reason, it seems a little limited. I saw a clip where a guy made a beat on an MPC2500 and then changed the tempo and the samples kept their pitch and octaves but the overall bpm changed. I have yet to have come across a software program that does that.

Logic kinda does it but you have to use the Apple Loop format. Which is cool I guess because you can create your own apple loops. So stretching is pretty easy in Logic, but Logic is missing a slicing loop player like the DR. Rex or the MPC. Ultrabeat is close but not quite the same thing. Logic also has a powerful time stretch function that I saw a demo of at Guitar Center when the guy took some Natasha Bedingfield vocals and adjusted their tempo without turning her into a chipmunk. I have used the fucntion but not really usefully.

I am sad to hear that the time stretch is kinda wack because I thought that was the strongest feature on the MPC over PCs. Second to the "on the fly sample chopping."

One of my boys had a 2000xl with an expanded board but once I showed him Reason, he said he'd never touch an MPC again. But he also didn't know about upgrading the OS and the sample friendly functions.

I had the MPC 500 for about two days but when I realized they stunted its capabilities I took it back immediately.

So anyway..........

This is what I needed to hear. I am going to buy an MPC today unless I find a stupid awesome deal on Ebay or something thus having to wait for shipping. Gotta decide between a 2500 or a 1000. My wallet is leaning towards the 1000.

After I learn how to use the 1000 and upgrade the OS and sh*t, I'll post a follow up as well as some video clips of the MPC in use compared to my PC workflow.

Actually...
After revisiting this thread, I think I am gonna go with the 2500. But I have a weird feeling about all this.... I wont speculate but in about a month. I'll post the results.

In regards to whether you should choose a MPC or PC since that seems to keep coming up in this thread:

I believe its more the aesthetic rather than anything else. For some people its not for them, for others it is. Essentially its just another tool to work with in order to make a song. People get it twisted like its more than that.

I dont believe its working in reverse either if you go from a PC to a MPC. There are notable advantages to both systems. But once again, it comes down to aesthetic IMO.

I really prefer to work on an instrument that provides me with a workflow that forces me to listen more rather than compose with my eyes. With computers, you tend to compose alot visually as well as aurally which may not always be a bad thing, but once again IMO, aesthetically its not pleasing - and i feel like it holds me back as an instrument.

With the MPC it has its limitations as well but there is also a direct relation between you and it as an instrument which i feel at least at this point is unatainable with a computer. I mean, an MPC is just a specialized computer in a box with pads. But it all comes down to what works best aesthetically for you.

And just for future reference for those that may be wondering. I have used BOTH platforms, and still do actually but primarily stick to my MPC1000.

I actually started out on a PC and worked that way for a span of at least 5 years. And i did it all: I went out and got me a Trigger Finger and a few controller Keyboards and that was cool and all but then i found myself always composing a certain way dependent upon the computer plus i had to have so many different devices connected to my computer just to make a song! I dunno, to me it was annoying. Plus it felt stale after a while. I didnt like the sterile feeling of booting up windows and staring at the same screen i wrote school papers on to make a beat. It just started to lack inspiration for me. (Once again this is all personal opinions so dont get yer panties in a bunch!)

Plus the process of sampling was a bit of a chore and i like to be able to get my source files IMMEDIATELY to work with rather than in a couple minutes and thats exactly what the MPC provided for me. You just arm the box press record, stop and then chop and your done.

With the PC it wasnt like it took eons but it still wasnt as DIRECT and fast as id like. I had to track into my DAW and then chop in there and inventory my samples. Then afterwards I could use them in Reason. It just got old i guess. I think Reason excels more as a synth program in that respect.

This is exactly what I think is going on with me. That is why I finally just coughed up the ends to get a 2500. I scored one on eBay for 1100. I am going to go hard at it for about a month and see what I can come up with.

I have this strange feeling that the MPC is going to be a workflow I can be a lot more creative with than my computer.

I'll see in about a month I guess.

Thats a rediculous price u got on it Om! Hope shes in good shape!?....One of the sickest features is that live sampling ability, that shits got infinite potential for stage performance.

When I was on eBay, I saw a bunch with $1599.99 buy it now prices. I was watching one auction and the unit did go for about 1200 and some. So when I saw this auction go up with a buy it now of $1125, I just said fuk it and bought it.

I will probably sell a bunch of other stuff i got to help offset the cost.
