Gift of Gab has passed away.

One of my all time favorite rappers. One of the best in the game. I was lucky enough to work with him on a Drunk Pedestrians track . He was a super nice guy and just great to deal with. I’m totally bummed.

How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

yes, and I always have my music mastered by someone else so I want the mix to breath quite a lot. We have totally different end goals, so there is no one right answer. It just depends on what you need to accomplish.

How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

See this is a perfect example of how it’s different for everyone, everything @YannFer said is solid advice, but I would never in a million years but a limiter on my master bus as it doesn’t accomplish my goals of wide dynamic range. @YannFer has a different mixing priority then I do. Nothing...

How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

Man that really just depends on the song and what is needed and what mixing style you have. I think in most rock/pop/hip hop songs the kick is the most important so I may spend quite a while working on tonal shaping of that with eq/compression or time based effects. Then I bring in the bass for...

How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

See I feel the opposite, music is so over compressed these days that it’s become fatiguing to listen to. So I try to use less and less. Jack Whites amazing record Blunderbuss was specifically mastered with no compression at all. My latest record that’s about to come out has minimal compression...

    Headphone amp?

Those headphones are great, you may be hearing your actually sound for the first time. We have all been there, can be a bit rough at first. Studio speakers and headphones are built for accuracy of the source material. Headphones like beats are about making it sound different.

Drumkit / Logic Pro X - Need some help :)

So don't compress the shit out of them and make sure they have good dynamic range.

.wav files are better in every way other then file size.

    Moving stems between DAW's

mp3 is a compression algorithm that makes audio files use much less hard drive space but it lowers the quality. .Wav files (and .aiff for old Mac heads) are uncompressed full quality audio files, you should ALWAYS mix down to 24bit .wav. Personally I wish DAW's didn't export to MP3 as it kind of...

    Moving stems between DAW's

Why are you zipping them up? Do you need to send them to someone else? You can export all the stems in one go in cubase.

    Moving stems between DAW's

Yes just export each individual track and you can export it in to whatever, I usually do it at 24bit 44.1 but whatever you recorded at.
