How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?
there is no right or wrong order, horses for courses, the "rules" are guidelines. I like to gain stage and eq before moving onto compression, no point having unwanted frequencies affecting the compression. Who/How/What To Study Regarding Music Production
I start with melody these days, then create a groove to suit the melody, sort of a fill in the gaps type of thing. I found that when I started with drums Id often have to change them later to suit the melody, so switched it up to save 5 mins hahahahaha @OGBama I wouldnt worry about sound...- 2GooD Productions

Headphone amp?
If you have high ohm headphones then you need a headphone amp. As @thedreampolice said, they are good headphones, that give a good representation of the sound. Just need a headphone amp.- 2GooD Productions
