Has harmony/melody technique regressed in popular music?

True. And I imagine one of the reason for this may be that music is now listened mostly on tiny phone/laptop speakers. So if you want the bass to come through, you need to balance the mix differently, hence the bigger kicks and 808 bass.

In your opinion, what makes the biggest impact on music?

I agree with @2GooD Productions. Some call it the feeling, the groove, the bounce... Whatever. It has to do with the drum and the bassline interacting. Also yes, some great songs do not have these elements. But it works the same with piano transients and lower notes. I noticed that great...

Has harmony/melody technique regressed in popular music?

I 'd say modern producers are not looking for advanced harmony or melodic features as we know the simpler the better when it comes to mass appeal. Also the research of new, never heard before sounds has always been on (from the use of hunting horns into music, through Jimmy Hendrix and his...

How fast can you make a beat? What's your personal record?

I tend to consider it key to let my beat rest for a moment (one day or so) and when i come back on it with a fresh set of ears, I know what must be taken off and what it needs added. The process might be repeated several times. So it always takes more than one day from start to finish. And then...

    Hi guys

I guess I'd say the type that were made in the late 90's, early 00's . Frankly I have listened to less and less hip-hop these past 10 years. I try but always find myself coming back to older stuff. Beatmakers that influence me most would be DJ Premier, The Alchemist, 9th Wonder... mostly these...

How does the listener (subconsciously) know what scale a melody is being played in?

If I am right about this, the subconscious you are talking about is the "feeling of resolution" which you assume must be on the tonic. If your tune is in C major but you start with a D (Dmin chord i guess), then you're probable more in A minor scale (same notes as C but in minor). Then your...

What kind of interface do you have?

I have a UA apollo twin but that's 2 inputs. Larger ones are expensive and they get cool when buying the also expensive UA plugins. I recently got me a SSL2+ for the road. I am happy with it so far. Great preamps for the bucks, but again only 2 inputs.

    Hi guys

Not sure as I never had the chance or the need to go into the big studios myself. My understanding is that the industry has changed and that they are closing one after the other. I read Fade's article regarding the "rap album we need" yesterday and one of the consequences of this is that.

    Hi guys

Hello everyone. I am from France, Paris suburbs. Been casually making beats since I was 15. Never did much with'em. I'd like to get and give feedback from and to you guys so that we can improve. I like my stuff, and I think now is the right time to get some input from outside and take it to...

    Beat This! - April 8-9, 2020

Hi everyone, same here. I been lurking for years now I guess. I finally had me some time to finally cook some beat I think worth sending to battle. I cannot wait to hear what you all came up with. The sample is great but lots a noise so, I had to work hard on it. Feedback greatly appreciated...
