I've been using the SP-808 for several years. I use it mainly to add vocals to a mix. It works great as a phrase sampler. But where the MPC excels, the SP-808 falls flat on it's face. The problem is since it saves everything directly to ZIP drive as apposed to the MPC which has internal RAM... -
If you're Sample Crazy and Swear by Sampling - WHAT IS THE LAW REGARDING SAMPLING?

Hooking Up Motif Rack/oxygen 8 Keyboard To Mpc 2000xl
Definitely go with the Mackie mixer. The Behringer may look appealing because it appears that you're getting the same features for less money, but the Behringer is way noisier than the Mackie. I've had a 1202VLZ Pro for several years and I've been very happy with it. -

Alternating 1/8 & 1/16 hi-hats plus a sidestick...also come in slightly late on the snares to give it that lazy, slow jam feel. -

Does anybody who lived in Los Angeles during the 80's remember the AM radio station KDAY? I used to love that station. The MPC 1000 will offer you that hands-on feeling that you can't get with software alone. You can use it to compliment your software, not replace it. I'd say go for it! -

Classic: Do you record from your Motif to the MPC in MIDI or Audio? And if you use MIDI, do you record the MIDI track as a sample to play back on a pad or do you leave it as a MIDI track? The debate between MIDI/audio formats has been going back-and-forth in my head for awhile now. Thanks... -
sound card....?
I use an Echo Mia audio card that I've been very happy with. I love comparing the noise floor of the Mia to that of my internal soundcard on the motherboard :) -
Mpc??
If you're just recording samples from vinyl and you don't have any other MIDI hardware like sound modules, synths, or samplers, then yeah.. you could connect the MPC directly to your soundcard. If you do have other equipment, I'd go into a mixer first. Just be aware that the MPC 1000 doesn't... -
Drum Machine Software
Propellerhead software makes a cool program called Rebirth that contains a TR-808, TR-909 and two TB-303's. There are many samples of the TR-808 and TR-909 out there but it's cool tweaking a graphical represenation of these boxes. Definitely worth a look. -

The SP-303 was my first sampler. I hooked my DMX box (aka Music Choice) into the input of the 303 and sampled like crazy! From there I moved to the SP-808 which I still use today. Even though the buttons aren't velocity sensitive like on my MPC 1000, I love the way they light up. I wish... -

It really depends on if you want your drums to sound like it came from a drum machine or if you want a more "live" sound. A lot of beats get that lazy sound by coming in a bit late on the snares. Personally, I almost always start with the kick drum. Then I usually lay down the snare, followed...
