    i advocate reaper. its not avid. its not mac only. its cross platform, fully featured, and works with just about any hardware/os/plugin combo you could imagine. a very very good alternative to the two aforementioned applications :)

    make sure its set to recieve midi on the same channel your controllers transmitting at... the controller might have a midi channel selector or somethin that got changed to another channel. most common problem youll run in to in that scenario.. hopefully your hardware isnt taking a shit.. oh and...

    yerp. more or less it comes down to good eq and comp. w/ cuts on the frequencies you arent looking to hear. i listened on shitty lil laptop speakers, but i'll say this much. my method goes: filter, eq, comp, maximize

    like they said, the freezer technique works alright... sometimes. if you have no luck with that, and really need the data... find a facility with a clean space, replace the drive heads, and ensure proper seating of moving parts and bearing.... or hire someone to do that... considering whatever...

    i gotta agree with that part with people blaming their pirated waves for not being good enough... having the SSL, API, and CLA bundles leaves you feeling little need for anything more in the realm of eq/comp when you know what you're doing..

    as for me, i think i'll go with some 2" foam pyramids/wedges, some corner cubes, and some bass traps for the corners of my office/studio.. beyond that, maybe a few sets of consumer speakers to a/b at most... cost? roughly 400... does a lot more for one than a room eq in the long run if you ask...
