I dont think its necessary to violate your beats as much as possible with effects for them to be considered LOFI. For me its all about the vibe, like if you found an old cassette tape in your parents attic. Some are in better shape than others

Yes its all up for personal interpretation. For me is all about sampling. My all time favorite lofi track is row flip by sweetbn_. He used a piano sample from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, pitched it down like crazy and added some deep drums. And the flow is amazing. Just my two cents...
