why do many established producers have 1 CDJ1000 (or similar CD turntable)

I assume its to sample cds from and to easily change the pitch prior to sampling right?

any other reason/s?

holla!

I have a CDJ-800 i use for live shows...

I also use it to just sample from cd as well, and i use it to scratch my MCs vocals when requested.. also, it comes in handy to be able to scratch anything you want

^^^^^

cool!

How does the CDJ800 compare to the CDJ1000? is there much difference?

I guess it would be handy to be able to adjust the pitch of a cd BEFORE you sample from it... do you find yourself doing this much Hoppa?

When MCs want their vocals scratched, you'd just burn their vocals to CD and then use your CDJ to scratch it right? For choruses and stuff I take it? Do you have any mp3s of songs or parts of songs where I could here where you've done this bro - it would be much appreciated!

thanks!

(I didn't mean to ask so much of you bro, I hope you don't mind)

answers....

1: The CDJ 800 i pretty much the same thing, for a better price.. i am just happy with that

2. Yea, sometimes ill tweak the pitch before i sample, to avoid software stretching... the CDJ has a WIIIIIDE pitch control as well..

3. yea , for hooks and shit.. if you listen to my song off of Illmuzik Compilations (Here We Are), listen to the hook, the vocals were scratched in..it is a simple use, but it's there

4. Dont sweat it bro! Glad to have helped

I'll peep your trizzack on the Illmuzik CD when I get home!

I'm seriously considering getting some or one CDJs, do you have one or two Hoppa? Also mate, I've peeped the technical info of teh differences between CDJ800 and CDJ1000 and it soesn't mean much to me... if you son't mind can you break down in a sentence or two what way (if any) the CDJ1000 is an improvement over the CDJ800.

i copped the cdj-800 for 400, when it was running for $800... the price has dropped since then to i think $600, its def. worth it, ive had mine for a couiple years NO PROBLEMS...

the difference has nothing to do with the platter, i think its some technical shit, im not real sure.. all i know is the 800 does everything i need it to do, which is play cds in a turntable manner.. theres cue points, pitch control, start/stop, and a "wind-down" adjustment knob so you can adjust how the cd slows down when you hit stop

i only have one...
i used to despise C-DJs, but once i started doing shows, i wanted to rock my beats on something other than a discman, something with more control, so i copped one... i sample off it rarely, i prefer vinyl, but it's great for cuing up your own tracks and using them in a dj set up

btw, thanks for the props, man thats an ooolllddd song!

thanks for the info bro. The props are well deserved, the beat is very nice and the MC has a smooth flow = dopeness

as far as what you were saying with incorporating the CDJ for your live shows, can you explain how you use it? I take it you copy the instrumentals you want to perform to cd and then play it in the CDJs type thing but from the sound of it you do more than just play it right?

(thanks again for the continued info mate :p)

Well, I have 2 turntables, and the CDJ is always hooked up to the left table's Line input. I switch it to line when Im ready to rock my own instrumentals. With the CDJ and live shows, it really eliminates unwanted gaps of silence between songs, cd NEVER skips, and you can emulate vinyl, so sometimes ill cut the beat on the kick, scratch it up a lil, then drop the beat back in like i would on a turntable, and the crowd is none the wiser. Also, I use a KORG KAOSS pad which KICKS ASS cause when i wanna switch tracks real quick (vinyl or cd) you can drop some ill bpm delays and have a good 4 count to cue up your next track and drop that shit! I love that thing, thats pretty much my set up right there along with an mpc 1000

Not to start a big debate or whateva but if you're only looking to scratch, the Numark CDX is by far the best CD turntable for SCRATCHING! If you're into mixing, effects, etc. that's a different story. But I'm an ol' school head who used to be a vinyl only jockey. I've had the Pioneers, Denons, and messed around with the Technics, but as for CUTTING AND SCRATCHING, none tops the CDX, in my opinion. I say try them all out for your specific purpose and decide which better suits you.

Shit, has nobody tried the SL-DZ1200 ? You'd bail on anything related...I havent scoped all models because nothing beats a SL1200, pitch control cd players ( from a dj's point of view, not from hiphop or production perspective ) is for pussies. But the SL-DZ is as close as you can get to the SL1200, at least the "turntable" responds as it should opposed to the SL1200. I aint feeling most other trying to achieve the same feel, especialy Pioneer made crap for unless you're a house dj and like beatcounters ( loser ).

Yup, I tried them and a slew of my friends (longtime DJ's/Producers) have tried them and the general result is, Technics bascially got the lock on turntables, but in the CD arena the SLDZ's ain't it. They going by name only, and not too many people are feeling them, hence the big price drop. The Denons have better features, the Numarks have a better sound and feel, and the Pioneers have the proven durability (in the CD area). I had the Denons and now own the Numarks. My partner bought the Technics and took them back when the Numarks came out. The feel is NOT the same as a 1200 and the scratch sound is horrible. The best feature is the SmartMedia card. This is not solely based on a hip hop/producer standpoint but from 18 years of DJing experience. Newbies who just started on CD's won't know and it won't matter to them, but to the long-time heads, there is a difference.

I've messed around with all of them EXTENSIVELY and out of the above mentioned, the Technics rank the lowest, and that has been the diagnosis of a lot of my industry friends. I love Technics turntables, but the CD joints get the thumbs down. But if you like them, and can rock 'em, keep doing your thang, it's all about personal preference and what works for the individual.

One!

Cool man, to each his own. I was just speakin on what I use my Pioneer for, and what I thought about it.

PS: I dont spin house. I dont use the beat counter. So you're argument holds no validity.

Yo son SizzaHanz has got a definite point there. I used to be a demonstrator for both Pioneer & Technics, and I have to tell you the cdj 1000 is by far the better of the two. I was really astonished that Technics would put their name on such a piece of crap, being that the 12's are such a legend. As for production use, the cdj 1000 or 800 is a good tool to have. I use it for all types of different things.
I too am also a vinyl junkie; but I have to give credit where it is due. I use it to scratch the samples that I've created myself and to seamlessly loop and chop samples that I take from cd's. It's alot cheaper than getting vinyl pressed everytime I create new stuff. Since the pitch control has such range, I can record those samples at the right pitch and tempo from the jump and not have to timestretch and waste time fiddlin' with the sample as much as I used to. Plus the memory function is also cool because it remembers the exact points of your sample or loop for every cd that you put in it (up to 100 I think) even after you shut it down. But with all that said ; I will never give up my turntables and become a cd spinner. I have a set of 1200's and a set of pdx2000's which I use for some of the same things as the cd player. I just use the tools that help me complete the job.
