Basically When YOu Chop your Sample Up Do you

First Make A Drum Pattern And PLay your Chops ON the Mpc , Keyboard Or watever you Use well playin the beat

Or

Do You Come up With A Melody THen Lay The Drums OVer The Chops ?

I was Just Wondering Cuz I Find it Hard 2 Make a Melody With CHops without Hearin a Beat well im Doin it

But My boy Rather Arrange a Melody and then Play His Drums 2 the Melody

SO wats Ya Process ?

I sort of do the opposite, I have the overall sound of the track in my head [including the kind of melody] but I'll start with the drums and bass, then work the melody over the top. I normally do stuff like that if I have a preconcieved idea - but when I find a particular sample I like I'll chop it up most of the time, then I'll work the whole track round that.

I normally start with drums because I play the drums, so I'm particularly biased towards that area and also its the backbone of any track so I'll always lay the drums and bass down first.

Hears is a chopping teqnique i have been experimenting with,
i will hear a praticlure sample melody in my head, but i wouldent know where to start to find it beacue its a chop. So instread of digging. I will play a little piano or gutiar scale on my keyboard, record it, chop it up.
and recreate that exact sample that i heard in my head.

I find this alot easiser then lookin for a sample that may not exist.

Yea in almost all my beats i have a re-sampled element in there to "gritey" it up

Whats great too is that when u sample yourself u can get it exaclty how u want when u chop it. You dont have to go threw the headace of timestretching etc....

For example say im making a beat at 90bpm. I will record a 4 for bar scale, chourd whatever at 90bpm and chop the loop. That whay everything fits perfectly and u still have that sample sound.

I find that when i play a scale or chourd and chop it up the results are the best. casue u end up coming up with stuff u never would have dreamed of. Even try sampling some of your own beats. You will be suprised

And u dont have to worry about royalties.

I generally stay in the trim mode for the 1st 3 chops, so I can get an Idea of what goes with what. then once I can get a least a 2 bar melody, I go back and and extract stuff out and fitlter it, chop it, pitch whatever, That is generally good enough to make melodies, but the best way for me is also to have the drums down before I mess with the chops. With a stright loop I can add the drums after I have the loop looked in

Well atleast a part of melody first. Then I usually add some basic drums to get better idea of the whole beat. Then I perfect the melody and drums...

that exactly what i do 90% of the time
