ok, well, there is only one vStI which i can highly recommend:
Spectrasonics Atmosphere.

it's a giant, 6 cds, vsti which produces anything from the most lush textures\strings\pads to the most harsh lead synths\basses.

Virtual Synth Technology (VST) takes advantage of your computers built-in electronics and turns it into a synthesiser.
VST (effects) and VSTi (Vst instruments) allow you to emulate the sound of hardware machinery within a software sequencer package.

sometimes it might be down\busy, but try to get in nevertheless.
on the right you have the navigation menu, choose an instrument\effect and you'll see a page about it with various info\reviews.

I highly suggest a VST instrument that gives you virtually no-limits on the boundaries of synthesis. With that said, I highly recommend Native Instruments' Reaktor series, or its more bold full line of Native Instruments VST bundle that it is currently marketing.
The VSTs you've stated can all be emulated in NI Reaktor and the modular technology of the programme can make virtually any form of synthesis possible. This requires an education in synthesis programming, which would be the ultimate weapon in your arsenal of production.

Everyone here knows how much I love Reaktor: with enough brains you could program your own Reason or Fruity Loops. Is it good for 'west coast' tracks? It's good for ANY tracks, but it won't do the work for you.
Additive, subtractive, FM, AM, PCM, granular, formant synthesis; runs as a standalone or plugin; compatible with all the major sequencers (even PT now, which is sort of strange), and you can find a buttload of synths on the net for free download or purchase.
This is the only softsynth I run on my computer because it KICKS SO MUCH ASS.

kontakt is a good sampler. i am a sample=playback man myself, i dont have time to tweak all day, but sometimes i like to sit around and come up with new stuff.......

I've used it before, it's pretty awesome for a sound module....the new version 2 is out now, and it's pretty cheap for what you get.
