all u web designers and graphic artist cats .. what do feel i the best way to learn all all this shit?.. i got photoshop a couple weeks ago, made a couple logos and altered some pictures and i am pretty much hooked on it. I figured out alot of it just playing around with it but i know i havent even scratched the surface of the program... do u guys just try diffrent shit or did u take some kindof course? also i wanna learn web design .. what do u guys feel is the best way to learn? take a course? read books?

lastly, i have a very shaky hand (prolly frm smoking so much weed lol) and i dont physically draw all that well... will that limit me alot in graphic design? ... one thing i do have though is very good stylistic taste and a strong ability to visualize shit really well. and i also am the type to work at something endlessly until i nail it so i know once the product leaves my hands it will be just right. I look at it this way, I cant play the keys but i can still produce, so why shouldnt i be able to do graphic design if i cant draw right? what r ur thoughts?

I want to make that shit a real source of income. here in nyc u can rack up serious dough just doing freelance work. But i dont wanna start taking jobs until imsure i can deliver a great product. How the hell do I learn this shit?

^^^ yeah its complex ...thats a deep ass program..... i understand layering ... and how to extract things from photos, i can take a plain photo and really make it look ill by giving it diffrent backgrounds and texts and effects and stuff like that, but i dunno how people actually alter the photos, ie: making a girls tits bigger or something like that lol. and theres numerous other things ive seen people do with it that i cant seem to figure out how to do.

I learned most of what I know about photoshop just by messing around, you should try getting a hold of some of the plugins, especially Eye Candy, phat fx in that plugin pack. If you want to learn web design, you must first learn HTML, its very easy to learn but is just the foundation for what will follow, things like javascript, PHP, MySQL is much more complicated and comes later, photoshop is great for designing websites, I did mine with it.
There is a great free HTML tutor online, I think I have a copy of that on my pc somewhere, Ill dig it up and pm a link, it will get you started on HTML(the foundation). I learnt how to use photoshop to design website by downloading a couple Web templates in PSP format and seeing how they were put together. Its a little complicated, but with a bit of time it gets easier. Learning HTML is easy, but the rest can be tricky, and take a little time.

I got a little into this, but never had the time to focus on it. I found a bunch of good tutorials on youtube actually. I was going more for the art side, like coloring drawings. Once you understand the concept of layering, the possibilities are endless though.

The flash fx applicable to each layer are key to all my designs.

Everybodies pretty much right - you just gotta mess with and try everything to learn about what its capable of. However, that doesnt always teach you the best way to work or everything you could know about a certain feature. I learned that way as well and then eventually wanted more and started to branch out in different ways to up my game.

You'l learn that PS is a great program but its also better for certain things (Photo related primarily) rather than others. It also has limited control over creating vector shapes which is key for making crisp scalable logos that dont loose resolution. For something like that, Illustrator is the better choice in my opinion.

What i would focus on learning first is:
Color management and working with RGB vs CMYK.
Raster files vs Vector.
The program in general obviously.

Good resources are:
www.lynda.com (This is a paid site but they make very comprehensive tutorials that will help u tremendously)
Use free online tutorial blogs as well - go to my site, i have a few listed in my links that are really good.

add me in with Rel and Ash, I do photography on the side, so have been playing around with Lightroom and Photoshop. Also did some layers/collage type work a few months ago.
I have a couple of good ebooks, one is by Scott Kelby, the other is CS3 for Dummies, between those two I can normally figure out what i'm trying to do (although it'll take me three or four hours to make it happen).
I think the internet lookup approach is a good way to go, there is definitely lots of good info out there, however like someone said it's easiest to make progress to research precisely what task you're trying to do.
Since these programs are so deep, basic training is usually pretty thick (800 + pages by book, or a full semester by classroom).

Photoshop is a great program, but like Steez said, Illustrator is best for vector graphics.

When you're referring to Web Design, you have to remember that there's the designing part, then there's the other part where you turn it into a web page. That's where HTML comes in, although today XHTML and CSS are the way to go, especially CSS. IllMuzik is done entirely in CSS, I only use HTML for certain tables because that's what HTML was originally designed for in the first place, it was never meant for designing.

So to learn all this shit, there's tons of resources. A great place to start for Photoshop (or just about anything) is here: http://www.pixel2life.com/

Its obviously good or an advantage to already be able to draw by hand but not entirely necessary with Photoshop or Illustrator unless your taking advantage of a Wacom. Both programs are more about "orchestrating desgin elements" to fit together as one to form some kind of comprehensive structure or composition.

Its all about precise placements and tweaking inside photoshop and knowing what filter and where to use it.

Ash .... it doesn't matter if you draw or not. I know a lot of people who does graphics that can't draw but they'll be creating some crazy designs in photoshop. I usually go to this site to get some ideas if I need info on how to do something.

There is a list of types of softwares on the left column and it tells you step by step on how to create something. Just look for photoshop

If you learn best by using step by step tutorials then the links on my page will help u a good deal.
Also, dont underestimate the magazine companies like Computer Arts, etc...they have a shit load of free downloadable PDF tutorials that teach you professional techniques....

One thing to remember is that with anything on the internet theres a lot of crap out there too posing as a true authority on something and so just make sure you go to the right place and judge whether or not your even learning something thats equivalent to a pro level otherwise your just going to slow yourself down.
