We've all experienced haters. The envy and jealousy teeming within these haters as they passive-aggressively try to subvert your success, or place seeds of doubt in your success. I'm sure we've also hated on other people, though we won't admit it
In any case. I am curious to hear your player-hater stories. Post them here. Player-haters come in all shapes and sizes, from family members, alleged best friends and acquaintances.
Here's one:
I was in a group a long time ago, and there were four of us. Two of the other cats were all right with me as I was the "creative" cat behind our music - the songwriter - if you will. I would write the songs - they would lay their vocals and it was all good.
But there was that OTHER guy who always wanted to have "his vocals" up first. He wanted to be the star, but the thing is - dude had no talent. He was with us because he was our friend. We were all friends.
Anyway, he kept showing signs of wanting to write songs - which he did. And - after a committee vote - we would vote them down, because honestly - they sucked. We also split publishing 4 ways to be "equal" but the dude was really insecure. Anyway, we were good enough to get meeting with major label A&R cats.
Of course, when you meet with A&R folks, they ask "who writes the songs?" You usually lie and say, "we all do." Aah, but the rep knows better, with a little more questioning - it always came out that I wrote the music and choruses. Well - then the A&R rep would end up talking to me every time we met more than the other cats.
We got a showcase and "passed" the so-called BS showcase test. We were on our way... and happy as hell. Again, publishing was split 4 ways.
The other cats did their thing, but that ONE GUY I told you about who was always wanting to shine more-- he called me up out of the blue and said "you're out of the group."
I was like - dude, what the fuck? YOU are firing me? He said that he didn't want to go on if he wasn't involved in the songwriting process and wanted more input. Turns out he was also talking a lot of shit behind my back to friends and acquaintances. In fact, one engineer that recorded us said "If I were you - I would stay away from him. He told me (so and so) about you. Watch out."
So, since we were signed together as a group - he sabotaged the whole situation. I tried to say "man, stick with it. You're crazy." But ME getting fired from my own crew? No way. The other cats were out of the state at the time. He said that the other cats said he could do his thing, so it was a vote by democracy.
Well, this didn't sit well with the record company and figured that drama like this would cost them. They ended up cutting their ties with us.
The other cats came back and found out they basically lost their deal and their group. OUr manager was pissed. They tried to reform, but it never worked out. The cat eventually tried to get me to rejoin - I said no.
Fortunately - my situation turned out OK, but you always imagine what could've been.
Getting hated on by a member of your own crew - someone you would be in a band with. That was crazy for me at that age.
